- you have to use galvanized pipe and fittings if its being ran inside the structure that your trying to protect. Iron will rust overtime and cease up any valves you might install and PVC will melt in a fire, defeating the whole purpose. I used to work for a fire sprinkler company and we dident ever do much in the way of fire hoses, but we ran all of our trunk lines and mains in galvanized piping.
