- Q: What is the payback period for solar panels?
- The payback period for solar panels can vary depending on factors such as the initial cost of installation, location, energy usage, and available incentives. However, on average, solar panels tend to have a payback period of about 5 to 10 years.
- Q: Can solar panels be used in combination with other renewable energy sources?
- Yes, solar panels can indeed be used in combination with other renewable energy sources. Many renewable energy systems today incorporate a mix of solar panels, wind turbines, hydropower, and geothermal energy to maximize efficiency and ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply. This combination of different renewable sources allows for a more balanced and consistent energy generation, reducing reliance on a single source and increasing overall system resilience.
- Q: Do solar panels require regular inspections or maintenance checks?
- Yes, solar panels do require regular inspections and maintenance checks to ensure optimal performance and longevity. These inspections typically involve checking for any potential damage, dirt or debris accumulation, and monitoring the efficiency of the system. Regular maintenance checks may include cleaning the panels, inspecting wiring and connections, and testing the functionality of inverters and other components. By conducting these inspections and maintenance checks, any issues can be identified and resolved promptly, maximizing the efficiency and lifespan of the solar panel system.
- Q: Hi there. I live in Colorado, and we obviously get a ton of snow there. I im looking into a solar power system for my home, and I am wondering if the snow will accumulate on the panels, or if, because of the energy passing through, it will melt on contact? By the way we get about 20' of snow each year, and it comes on often. I will also be putting them on my roof. Thanks for your help.
- Good news and not so good news. You need to be able to access the panels to clean the snow off. There is not any heat generated other than the heat of the sun hitting the black colour - which would amount to some melting ability during a sunny day - but it isn't sunny when it snows! Apparently, solar panels work better in the cold and where snow can reflect light so to increase the amount of light - photons - hitting the panel.
- Q: What is the average annual energy output of solar panels that can be installed on the home?
- The output of a solar panel would depend on your location and panel size. Most solar panels are rated using 000 Watts per square metre from the sun. This is only possible at the equator. Some supplier have online estimators for output depending on your location. Solar panels rate up to about 250 Watts per panel. I have an online calculator to work out the costs and benefits of solar. You can compare the costs of solar setup and 25 years of electricity versus buying from the grid.
- Q: I'm making a model of a solar photovoltaic tower for a school project. I need a way to store energy, and we thought about using capacitors (mainly because of our somewhat limited funding). The tower will have a small photovoltaic panel (around the size of a laptop keyboard with number pad) and some (around 50) quot;heliostats(just the mirrors, no moving parts). What kind of capacitors should i use? and would a capacitor bank be better? i am getting confused with all those uF, pF and can't see the difference.Thanx in advance
- Solar Capacitor
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a streetlight?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a streetlight. This allows the streetlight to be powered by solar energy, reducing the reliance on traditional electricity sources and making it more sustainable.
- Q: How much would it cost (approximately) to convert my home (3 bed. 2 bath) to a green home that is run entirely upon solar panels on my roof? From the panels through installation does anyone know a price break down?
- Either you, or someone else, asked this same question yesterday, and the answers given were that it is not possible for us to answer it. The costs depend on where your home is located, what prevailing local labor rates are, how difficult it is to get the equipment to the site, etc, etc. I think one of the answers was that for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house the cost for all the necessary equipment listed would be in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I think that was an underestimate, and that it could be 40 to 50 THOUSAND!!!!! The answerer also pointed out that due to the exorbitantly high costs of the technical equipment that at this time the equipment will wear out BEFORE IT EVER CAN PAY FOR ITSELF IN SAVINGS for on the grid electricity. I agree with that. You need to discuss your wants with 3 or 4, even 5 or 6 LOCAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS to get a reasonably accurate estimate of the costs!!!!!!
- Q: Could you have a solar panel in space that would transmit electricity remotely? Maybe have some kind of receiving antenna to pick up the energy? Perhaps there could be a string of them orbiting the Earth? Why wouldn't that work?
- Absolutely. Many satellites and other spacecraft that have been launched throughout history carry solar panels to power themselves. The International Space Station alone has hundreds of square meters of solar panels. Transmitting the power from one place to another wirelessly is a bit more difficult, but not fundamentally impossible. So far we don't have any good technology to do it over long distances. But we're getting there. One proposed future source of power is 'solar power satellites', orbiting devices that would collect sunlight and turn it into a microwave laser that would be fired down to the Earth and collected in a giant dish kind of like a radio telescope. The idea is that this would be non-polluting, environmentally friendly, reliable, would help to boost investment in space technologies, and wouldn't take up the large amounts of land area required for traditional solar power. However, some people have argued that it is a bad idea on the basis that if the laser accidentally missed the dish, and came down in an inhabited area, it might cause human fatalities or damage to the environment or human artifacts.
- Q: Harbor Freight sells a 75 watt solar panel, a surge power inverter, and deep charge batteries. But no one there can tell me how to put it all together. I want the end output to be a simple power bar that I can plug my devices into. I live in an apartment so I can not wire it directly into the grid. Please only serious responses. Don't waste your time and mine.
- i wouldn't. - harbor freight isn't known for the best quality stuff. - 75 watts assumes roof mounting, at 90 degrees to the sun, on a bright day. you're going to get considerably less. and only when the sun is highest in the sky. maybe you should look at, your computer, for example. if you're using it for 4 hours, and it has a 500 watt power supply, and you add 200-500 watts for the monitor, and some for the printer, modem, etc, you'd use 5kw that day. your 75 watt panel, generating maybe 50 watts at most, for maybe 4 hours when the sun was highest, and shining directly on the panel, would generate 200 watt hours. it would take 25 days to generate the electricity you'd use in single day. in the winter, you'd be pretty much out of luck. there just isn't enough bright sun. clearly, it's up to you, but there's a harbor freight near me, and i'll not be rushing out to get such a system. further, most appliances are quite voltage sensitive. you really do need to have the voltage in the 0-20 range. too much out, either higher or lower, will shorten the life of appliances at best.
