- I've had a lot of success removing permanent marker off of plastic with Staedler white erasers. Depending on how fragile the plastic is (sorry - I don't know much about trading cards!) it might be tricky. Also, if the plastic is at all rough or porous it probably won't work well either. I'm military, however, and we use permanent marker to mark laminated maps, and erasers when we need to change the markings...and this sounds like it could be a similar situation. Good luck!

- yes the air gap will help because air is an excellent insulator, however, make the gap very small, because if you make it too large then you can get lots of convection(where the air can circulate inside the gap) which will significantly lessen the insulation qualities. This same idea is used in regular fiberglass insulation, the air gaps are created by very small holes in the insulation, and these small holes also help to keep the convection down.

Have a good look with a strong light under there, and you might be able to answer your own question. Also, though the dealers might not be of much help, there is probably someone in the neighbourhood who does repairs on mobiles, and it might be worth getting them to give an opinion.
