- Q: I laid a new porcelain tile floor in my bathroom. Old linoleum tile floor was in good shape so I just laid right over the top of it. All turned out well except around the toilet. Two of the tile cracked when I screwed the toilet back down to the floor. Obviously I‘ll have to pull the toilet again, remove cracked tiles and start over....but how to I avoid the cracks again?
- The floor under the toilet wasn't level so when the weight of the toilet went on top of the tiles it caused the tiles to crack. Make sure the tiles are back buttered as well as thinset on the floor and that they are level with each other. I would cut out any vinyl from around the toilet and then apply the tiles. Also wail for the thinset to dry for a couple days before installing the toilet so the tiles don't move.
- Q: Some people say that only natural tiles have radiation. Cheap certainly not a natural stone, there will be no radiation, is that right?
- All the objects in nature, as long as the temperature above the absolute temperature of zero, are in the form of electromagnetic waves to keep out the heat, this way of transmitting energy called radiation. The energy emitted by an object through radiation is called radiant energy. Radiation is calculated according to Roentgen / Hour (R) The media claims that the so-called granite that can cause radioactive damage to the human body, mainly refers to the relatively long decay time radon 22 (half-time of 3.83 days). In fact, since ancient times human beings live in a radioactive environment. Radioactive is not only natural stone, paint, cement, red brick, ceramics and other building materials are also. Need to be properly understood and treated correctly. Scientific development shows that a certain dose of radiation will not cause harm to the human body and the environment, the rational use can also benefit mankind. The use of stone in the home, the release of radiation from the tiles on the human body is negligible. If too concerned about the words of their own modern housing can not live, and modern residential structure of the main concrete, and concrete material is sand, sand is actually a small point of the stone .... dizzy dare not want to live to the moon is not the same kind of radiation
- Q: If you butt the all the tiles without any spacing, will the tile crack or bubble up due the expand and contract?
- I have butted 12 x 12 marble tiles together without a grout line, but it was a small entry area. I lived there for several years without any problems. Marble, however, is very slick when people come into your home with feet shoes or feet.
- Q: OK here is my problem. I want to switch my bath tub to an all-tile shower and wonder how to do it. So far the tile were set onto a cement board that was itself put on top of the drywall. I am wondering if this is a common thing. From all my research, it looks like tile should be on the cement board, but there is no use for extra drywall behind it. It actually makes things tougher because you need some sort of corner tile instead of normal bullnose since the cement board and the rest of the wall are not at the same level. My second question is: is there an order to do all this i.e. should I make the shower pan (sort of rubber sheet filled with cement), before or after I install the cement board on the wall. Is there a specific angle used for the drain? Thanks in advance for all your tips.
- If you have never done a shower before, I suggest purchasing a shower pan instead of making one yourself. Take out everything around your tub to the studs, then install the plumbing and pan, cement board (no need to have drywall behind it), tile and grout. You will see the drain attached to your tub, will probably need to move it in order to line up for the shower pan. It is not an easy job, depending on how the pipes run and if floor joists will create a problem in moving the drain. You may want to move the supply lines as well to have a typical shower height faucet.
- Q: I am planning on laying down tile in my dining room and kitchen. I recently saw an offset pattern with 12x12 tiles and liked it. I‘ve now decided to go with the same offset pattern but with 20x20 ceramic tiles. Would I still have to find the center of the room and start tiling out from the center or can I just start at one wall and go from there since i‘ll be using the offset pattern? Thanks in advance.
- Not always so with an off set pattern....Because when you start from center on a normal square pattern and you end up w/ a small cut along the wall, you can re center the tile in the room to get a better cut along the wall. Doing this to an off set pattern , won t change that small cut on 1/2 the rows.. It all depends on room lay out and your site lines.. That I can t answer you. Now if you start in the center and do get a good lay out on both sides, then by all means, center the tile.. If you have a long site line on one wall, which is very visible, and cabinets or something different on the opposite wall to break up the pattern, Then you may consider going off that wall w/ a 1/2 tile along that wall.. I m not there to see it but I m good at visual lay outs. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
- Q: How long are ordinary white strip tiles?
- There are four general specifications: 8 × 40 12 × 45 40 × 60 Commonly known as kicked tiles.
- Q: Remodeling a bathroom, using 4x4 ceramic wall tiles and have an old porcelain wall-mount sink.QUESTION: Do I put screws through the tile and put the mount OVER the tile, hanging the sink that way OR do I hang the sink on the untiled wall and tile around it?Thanks for your help!
- 1-locate studs / eye balling as well for centering of bracket 2- cut hardwood strip to match wall mounting bracket' {2x as thick as tile, this allows for a good thick bead of caulking counter sunk, so to speak around behind the sink, thus hiding the sealer /after step #10 } 3-drill screw strip to wall, being conscious to : set the screws so they are offset to sink bracket's screw placement. 4- attach wall bracket 5- practice hang sink/ checking the fit 6-NOW, draw a pencil line tracing the sink 7- remove sink 8-TILE TIME [LOL] Now you can tile up to the bracket [wasting tiles].NO! Now it gets easy! This method reduces your tile cutting. 9- Tile the wall, using FULL tiles up to the pencil mark {if it is :LESS than 1/2 a tile to the Line , slap a full tile on , if you want 10- { 1/2 a tile inside the trace mark is plenty, if you don't want to be bothered cutting you don't have to . Note: Leave the edge here , till your done all your other tile ,'cause you might have good 1/2 or 3/4 pieces that you can trim it with}...Or just go back and put full tiles to cover. Hope this helps! ..hang sink, caulk top, done!
- Q: Remodeling the bathroom...How can i drill a hole in ceramic tile...What kind of drill would I use..or what kind of file would be best to make a hole in the tile to go around the shower faucet..Thanks for your input...
- If you have a small Dremel Multipro hand held drill Model 285 or equal with a diamond drill bit to cut circular holes that would save you a lot of time.
- Q: I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? In otherwords: in total, how much would I pay to have the entire apartment tiled in ceramic vs. vinyl? Please note I am not a DIY person AT ALL so approximate labor prices are crucial. Thanks!
- vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape, you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day, whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........
- Q: about a year ago i had tile installed on my home but winter is here and i was wondering if i could get carpet installed over the tile without getting the tile damage
- Actually, if you're talking about ceramic tile, you can't just lay carpet over it... unless you really like the look of seeing the grout indents from the tile that will eventually show through the carpeting. Sorry... I do know how you feel though because my entrance, my hallway, my kitchen and dining area as well as the powder room are all ceramic tile. I live where it gets down to -46 Celsius (with windchill factor). One day, I'll change everything but the kitchen for either hardwood or bamboo or cork, but for now, I solve the cold feet problem by using runners in the hallway, area rugs in the bathroom and kitchen and a sqaure rug in the dining area, under the seating and table (I have a round table). I have an entrance rug and rugs for all the ?(% boots! I also have a basket of home-made knitted slippers in various sizes. That way, even if a guest comes buy (in February, with soaking wet boots and only nylons on her feet), they can enjoy the warmth. There might be a way of putting down a veneer floor without nails, directly on top of your ceramic tile. It would have to be easy to remove. Perhaps using silicone, but you might want to ask that question here on answers, and get a specialist in that area to help. If you can do it without ruining your tile, then you could easily glue a carpet to the veneer floor. My final thought is this: If you're here on Yahoo answers in the decorating forum, you likely enjoy decorating. So take the throw rugs and and area rugs and have fun with it. Turn it into a decorating scheme. When Fall rolls around, pull out those rugs, match them to your decor and color scheme and turn them into part of the room. When Spring rolls around, roll up the rugs, sweep out the winter and turn your floors back into a soothing cool for tired feet. Hope this helps!
