- the plywood is a subfloor. after you remove the vinyl. you should lay an underlayment before tiling. check at the tile store for instructions. Don't think you can do a quick cheap job on tiles because the tiles or grout lines will crack and you'll have to redo everything. The subfloor makes for a clean fresh starting surface and should be screwed down every few inches as per instructions.

- Q: I have an on going problem in my kitchen. Same time tile floor was done in our home but kitchen is the problem. He left some grout with us and said if ever the grout pops up then we can mix it in the water and fill with this mixture. The grout from the kitchen floor always comes out. - When the tile was laid it didn't have enough mortar/thin set put underneath some tiles...If so then the tiles shift and the grout cracks..I am a 37 year experienced painter, but have done all phases of construction work..I was once being a helper for a regular tile man when the painting was slow, and he had a contractor that before he paidd them , walked around with a golf ball and from a little over waist high he dropped a golf ball on each and every tile..The ball will respond on a properly laid tile and bounce back with a good solid sound..when he reached one that did not bounce all the way back and made a hollow thud sound..he marked that tile and Brian had to pull it and replace it before receiving his check on a completed job.. The best tile layers will possibly have 3 or 4 in a house without enough thin set under them,but a poor tile layer can have 40 or 50 in a house improperly done..TRY THE GOLF BALL TEST yourself and see..before deciding on the points here..I bet one of the tiles on an area where the grout is coming up..will give you that hollow thud..keep in mind there are at least two tile next to the grout, if not 4 if near a corner..I just bet ...get a cheap golf ball and try this..You will see what I'm talking about..You can literaly pull any imporoperly laid tile up if careful without breaking it.. scrape the thin set off..and same for the thin set on the floor..and reset the tiles...Go through test all your tiles..then put one of them flourescent garage stickers on each improper one..then reset them

- Q: I want to rip up the old linoleum in my bathroom and install some tile. The previous owners laid the current layer of linoleum on top of the original linoleum. From the little bit I‘ve peeled up to look underneath it looks like chip board underneath that. Does that mean I need to lay some kind of backerboard underneath the tile? I also plan on tearing out the curent cabinets and installing new ones. Should I install the tile or the cabinets first?
- If you plan to gut the bathroom then yes rip up the old flooring and put new ply wood down. dont use the good one side ply as the glue you will be using will require something to bite into. but if the plywood you use does have some knot holes then yopu have to use a patch filler before applying the glue. in your case its better to fit the new flooring from wall to wall rather than cutting around the new cabinest. you didnt mention what type of flooring you plan to replace the exsisting flooring with. If you are planning ceramic,porcelin,slate/natural stone then you will not have to se that patch filler. but remember when using any sort of tiles of the above mentioned use a thinset as using any mastic will take a very long time to set. Thinsets will set in 24hrs intile for you to grout the next day. Do keep in mind the temps to lay your tiles down on the back of the boxes of grout.
- Q: I need to repair my shower, about 6 tiles fell off. I‘m currently drying the drywall with a fan. Whats the best way to glue tile back on the wall?
- First of all I would look at the wall behind where the tile has came off. If your house is old or installation was poor they may not have the proper material behind the tile, as in the wall. If it is sheetrock, no wonder! You need either greenboard or dur-rock behind it that is the code. Anyways, once you find this out see if it's only sheetrock behind it, it won't do you any good to stick em back up. Which if the material behind is fine than just get some match stick at home depot that's cheap but creates a nasty mess. Or grab a small bag of thinset which you mix with water or some will require an extra additive which will be where ever you go for the thin set. You can get this stuff at Home Depot or Lowes while your there I 'd grab a trowel with 3/8 knotch spacers and your grout. Hopefully all of the peices were full peices. If not your gonna have to borrow a hand held maquita or cutter or saw. Make sure your rows with trowel are even with through out your spread. If you are using thinset, you have to apply thinset to wall and tile. Obviously you stick the tile first grab some sort of extra scrap to spread them appropriately. Wait a day for the thinset to set up and the next day pull out your wedges or spacers and grout. Good luck. Chic
