- Q: Just how long the renovation of the new house, my home bathroom tiles on the ground as long as the bath will be seepage, the investigation of the pipeline without problems, leaks are no problems, where the problem? Urgent to be resolved.
- You say is the bath water up to it! This is because the water can not flow in time when the water or water from the wall tiles and seepage, the ground tile pavement is empty shop, so the water will go back! If it is water infiltration, it goes without saying that waterproof is not done!
- Q: therefore creating a gap in the center of the wall for grouting... or tiling one tile and grouting it with the gap at the wall and the next tile side putting a grout line down that way
- Tile one wall all the way to the corner, leaving a small gap at the wall to compensate for any wall movement. Then tile the other wall. leaving the same size gap as your grout lines between the two. You do not want to have a void in the corner.
- Q: I got these tiles at a yard sale. They appear to be very old, hand painted and likely of Mexican origin. The label is tattered and faded, but I would love to know more about them. Thanks for any info in advance.
- They are generically called Calavera tiles and are made in Mexico by hundreds of different companies. In fact, just check Ebay for calavera tile and you will see a lot of them in similar designs. They install like any fired clay tile -- some people use them as accents with solid saltillo type tile. I have a bunch of them that I bought to use for a project that I changed my mind about. They are still so pretty that I use them for coasters and may eventually encorporate them into a design for my stone fireplace hearth. Yours look fairly vintage -- nice find!
- Q: I just installed a backsplash in my kitchen. It is glass mosaics with slate - 1x1. Today I began grouting and after it sat for 2 hours ( as instructed) I began wiping it down with a wet sponge. After scrubbing it for about an hour there is still a considerable amount of grout on the tiles - especially the slate. I used non sanded grout which is recommended for my tiles, but it will not come off! What can I do to remove the grout off of these tiles without scratching them? Please help. Thankyou
- no longer directly, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, you're for all useful purposes arising a counter-top, so which you will could desire to handle it as such, complete with an suited backer cloth and side steel.
- Q: Do you fill up the grout all the way to the top or only upto inner edge? We filled it up to the inner edge, but now the grout and the tile edges are starting to collect dirt very easily and it is very hard to clean. We are thinking of regrouting all the way to the top so that it will be easier to clean. Is that the correct way to grout these tiles?
- Most all tiles ( there are exceptions) are always grouted flush to avoid a couple of things. One is the problem your having now and the other is to protect the edging of the tile.depending on just how much more you have to fill in, you make have to dig some grout out to get a proper bond.. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
- Q: OK here is my problem. I want to switch my bath tub to an all-tile shower and wonder how to do it. So far the tile were set onto a cement board that was itself put on top of the drywall. I am wondering if this is a common thing. From all my research, it looks like tile should be on the cement board, but there is no use for extra drywall behind it. It actually makes things tougher because you need some sort of corner tile instead of normal bullnose since the cement board and the rest of the wall are not at the same level. My second question is: is there an order to do all this i.e. should I make the shower pan (sort of rubber sheet filled with cement), before or after I install the cement board on the wall. Is there a specific angle used for the drain? Thanks in advance for all your tips.
- If you have never done a shower before, I suggest purchasing a shower pan instead of making one yourself. Take out everything around your tub to the studs, then install the plumbing and pan, cement board (no need to have drywall behind it), tile and grout. You will see the drain attached to your tub, will probably need to move it in order to line up for the shower pan. It is not an easy job, depending on how the pipes run and if floor joists will create a problem in moving the drain. You may want to move the supply lines as well to have a typical shower height faucet.
- Q: We just installed laminate wood floors tiles in our open space living/kitchen room. We put ceramic tiles in the kitchen area the wood laminate in the living area. Due to time constraints we had to get the laminate installed first before the tiles. Our tiler was supposed to put something between the wood the tiles but didn‘t. He‘s not being very cooperative about completing this, so we are trying to do something ourselves. What can we put there, so that the grout stops coming apart where the tiles laminate wood meet? Thanks.
- Hopefully, your tile guy used a metal edge to end the tile. It makes for a cleaner look for a transition to another floor. If he did not, it just makes it a bit more difficult but not impossible... My suggestion would be to use silicone in between the two floor types. Grout will always crack there if there is no edge installed. The laminate floor moves and the tile doesn't (hopefully, or you have more problems to look forward to with cracking grout...) so the silicone allows the movement. It does depend on what colour the grout is but if it's white, almond, dark grey/black; you can use silicone right out of the tube in place of the last bit of grout or between the metal edge and the laminate. You will have to scrape out some of the grout from the transition area... about 1/16 deep where the tile ends and the laminate starts. If it is not a standard silicone colour, you have to mix clear silicone with some grout powder (on a sheet of cardboard or something... to make a silicone grout that matches...) and force it in the crack with your finger. Use masking tape to cover the laminate edge and the edge of the tile and leaving an open area between... take the tape off while the silicone is wet and rub any excess off each surface. Once it is cured, you can rub off the remaining excess silicone from the tile with your finger. Even if the colour is not exact, grout changes colour (darker) over time... even if you seal it... the seal wears out, most people don't keep up with re-sealing etc... Sounds time consuming yes, but works well and worth the effort as opposed to a threshold trim that will result in a high spot over the joint. Good luck!
- Q: Tile setters? I paid someone to tile my bathroom floor using the 1 in hex tiles meshed together in 12 x 12 in pieces. Ive seen that type of tile done before and it each tile looks evenly spaced. The tiles he installed for me look like they were installed in 12 x 12 pieces as the perimeter of the meshed tiles has much wider grout lines than the interior. He says its normal and it happened because the floor is uneven but he installed the hardybacker himself so he should have leveled it.
- I can t believe these builders and tile setters didn t pick up on what you said..You said he installed the backer board and should ve leveled the floor. Un even grout will occur if the floor isn t flat so the installer is right about that. But he was wrong in doing a job that had a floor that wasn t flat. Part of his duty when bidding or time of installing is a floor inspection. And he should ve brought it to your attention and tell you that it ll be a bit extra to fix it or tell you that you have a dip or hump. It may have been a simple fix or something costing some money, I can t see it from here. Give him a chance to fix it. Then work w/ him to see if it can be worked out..Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
- Q: I will be making a 36 x 36 hearthboard for my gas fireplace stove out of slate tile. Do I need to space them and use grout in between or can I just cement them down next to each other like you would glue down vinyl tiles?
- With a gas stove, Code just requires you don't set it on something combustible. With joints of any kind it is considered combustable since heat can travel through the grout/mortar but wont travel through the tile, so if your going to make it your self, the easiest way is to buy a piece of Cement board from HomeDepot, and glue all your tiles down with Power Grab caulk then fill the joints with grout, other wise it is not code. Just sticking them to the floor does not qualify and if anything ever happens your liable for it, insurance wont cover it. This kind of board won't work for wood though, it would have to be heavier duty. Make sure you make it big enough to meet the clearance to combustibles listed on the back of the stove as well
- Q: Now very popular tile 80X80 pink above the tea stains, how can effectively remove the tea stains?
- Glazed tile pollution cleaning method: For glazed tiles, the glazed layer of the brick is very dense material, colored liquid or dirty things will not penetrate into the brick body, the brick surface of the contaminants of the use of wiping water or add some cleaning spirit wipe the brick Surface can be removed from the brick surface dirt, if it is a strong sense of convex tiles, convex cracks inside the squeeze a lot of dust, then use the brush brush, and then rinse with water to remove the brick surface dirt.
