The male barbed fitting goes inside a rubber hose and the barbs keep it there. A male quick connect goes with a female quick connect. They just snap together, and then apart again.

What are the logical reasons for this?: If you are talking about the water line that feeds the refrigerator, I wouldn't suggest changing it to copper, simply because the plastic hose is more flexible and won't crack if bent in the same place repeatedly. If you are set on making the change, make sure that you can do so without pinching or kinking the copper line (this includes when you push your fridge back into place). The copper fittings are similar to the plastic, as both plastic and copper line make use of compression type fittings. Make sure to get the same size pipe as the old hose with the proper fittings. You can get these by asking for assistance at most hardware stores. You will need a reaming tool to make sure the copper pipe flares at the end and is smooth. This may also be obtained at most hardware stores. Then cut to the pipe to the proper length, make sure you have smoothed and flared both ends of your pipe, connect the pipe to the valve and the refrigerator, and make sure to tighten both fittings properly. Not very hard. Make sure to watch your fittings for a while to make sure you don't have any leaks before pushing your fridge back in place. If it's copper pipe and the leak is on the actual pipe itself, you can repair the leak with push together fittings (shark bite, pro bite, there are many brands just ask your clerk at your local hardware store). Since this is on your tub I'm guessing this is a half inch pipe and will take 1/2 inch fittings. Most of these fittings have been approved for permanent use and will last years to come. If your piping is galvenized, I would suggest using what is called a pipe repair clamp. This is a stainless steel saddle that has a rubber inside that clamps around the hole in the pipe. This will temporarily fix a leak on a galvenized system and most hardware stores carry these in 4 lengths to 6 lengths. I would strongly suggest having a repipe done with new copper or pex piping as soon as you can. *note* To cut out the hole in a copper system, you will need a copper tubing cutter. These pipes are generally in hard to access places so I would by a very small cutter, often referred to as a thumb cutter. If the leak is on a fitting, you are best to just call your plumber out. One side of the sleeve should have an internal diameter equal to the outside diameter of the copper tube; the other side of the sleeve will have an ID a tiny bit larger than the OD of the glass tube. Needless to say, there is a hole that goes right through the sleeve. Solder the sleeve onto the copper tube and glue it to the glass tube using an epoxy glue (provided the temperature will not exceed 100C; if it will get higher than 100C, use a ceramic cement). Be sure to do the soldering first otherwise the heat will crack the glass.
