- Q: I have two solar panels that were going to be trashed at work. I want to use them to charge batteries on my RV but i noticed they put out around 20 volts in direct sunlight. So i am wondering: -isn't this way too much voltage for a 2 volt system? -do a need some sort of a regulator connected to keep them from overcharging?
- 20 volts is a common open-circuit voltage for nominal 2v panels. The panels put out about 5v at full load. If the panel puts out little enough that it takes 20 hours or more to put a full charge in the battery you can get by without a charge controller - just keep the cells topped up with distilled water. A charge controller will do a more efficient job, though. The most efficient charge controllers use what's called Maximum Power Point Technology (MPPT) which lets the panels operate at their most efficient point throughout the battery's charging cycle. Available on OKorder. The charge controller should have the same or higher wattage as the panels it controls - if you're not sure of wattage, assume that they are the same as similar area panels you find for sale. Before buying a charge controller, connect the panels through an ammeter to a discharged battery. They may have been trashed because of damage and low output. You need at least an amp for trickle charge, 5 amps for reasonable recharge times.

- Why: ) It's a great technology. 2) It has low impact to the environment. Why Not: ) Initial cost is substantial. 2) solar panel technology is greatly improving. I would hold out for a few more years when you can actually use it as a sustainable source and as a replacement source and not so much a suplimentary source.

- How does the cable wires stay on the solar panel? With wire retention clips (4 per module) that are used to wrap the wire on the underside of the module frame. The home run cables to the transition box (converts between types of wire with no electrical transformation occuring) or combiner box (joins multiple source circuits in parallel, with the positives fused for safety) are usually tied along the racking system components, and with conduit sections used as needed. Racking is another big part of the installation. Don't just make your own homemade wooden rack, as these will weather away to nothing very easily, and cause great failures. GET a professionally designed metal racking system. PV modules are EXPENSIVE. Don't let the racking system cause them to break. It also requires the inverter, if you intend it to connect to the main electric service. If using multiple inverters, you need an AC combining panelboard to join them prior to entering the main electric service. Otherwise, you need to think about how else you might be using them. If you are charging batteries, you need a charge controller.

Most of the panels i have looked at are for car batteries but i'm not sure how this would be able to be transfered into electricity. - Sounds okorder .. I've seen the particular device listed there. While the lamp is mediocre for an LED light source, the panel is excellent - real polysilicon wafers, in an aluminum frame. Same construction as the kind of panels in commercial installations.

- I also doubt your claim of 4% efficiency. That strength solar panel is brand new technology (this year) and is not available in retail sizes yet. You probably got duped by some false marketing... In any case; even assuming you had a 4% solar panel, there are too many things for us to give you an accurate assessment of the power production. Clouds, location on earth, season, angle of the solar panel; these are all things we need to know to calculate it. Odds are it should have the average rate it produces electricity written on the back panel or with the instructions that came with it. I know of no solar panel retailers that do not also offer free installation. You should get your money back or get that free installation (and then you never have to worry about how much power it has, it just gets you what it can).
- Q: I want to buy a solar panel kit to run my central AC unit. it is a 3 ton unit. Can I do this? The electric rates in the Chicago area are skyrocketing and I can't keep paying 350 dollar electric bills during the spring and summer months
- I know that in Texas we wouldn't even try to run an air-conditioner on a generator without at least a 6,000 watt generator and we would prefer a 0,000 watt generator. The calculator on the Kohler website says it'll be 7,500 watts. At $5 per watt to install a solar photovoltaic system and assuming you also need to run it through the night and taking into account that an inverter can be as bad as 60% efficient, you're talking about $87,500 just to run your AC for 25 years. The first step in going solar is to significantly reduce your energy use. You're not going to maintain your current energy use on solar, at least not cost effectively. If you did want to run an AC on solar power, you may want to look at absorption air conditioning and use evacuated tube solar thermal collectors instead but don't expect it to be cheap and it usually only augments the use of natural gas in the absorption chiller.

- The solar panel is capable of /2 Amp output. If you hook it to a 2V battery directly and the battery is discharged it will want more than /2 Amp and pull the voltage down until the battery is charged to a certain level. Eventually the battery will try to charge up to 00V which will definitely damage the battery. If you use a regulator circuit running off the solar panel that outputs 2V then you will have a constant voltage circuit which will still be limited to /2A or whatever the regulator is capable of outputting. Of course you can't just go out and connect 00V to any voltage regulator it has to be capable of running from 00V and dropping the voltage to 2V like the original charger that comes with the battery. The same explanation applies to a 72V battery. You have to limit the output voltage to 72V or risk overcharging the battery.
