- Not a good answer: CNBC had a news bit, that it can take 0 to 20 years for you to break even in energy costs after installing solar panels. Please don't buy them just for the tax deduction. See if you can google a calculator for this - do research. I have a brother in law that buys anything under the sun just because he gets a tax deduction. I'm sure you're not like that though. Run the numbers of what you will save vs the 2K you will spend You may never break even

- I don't have any practical experience building solar panel arrays to power a given device, but allow me to make this observation. Solar cells, when exposed to sunlight, will each generate a given amount of power (watts), and by wiring these in series, you will increase the wattage. Now, a panel three feet square will give you a certain amount of power, provided all the cells are wired correctly in series, and it may not provide enough juice to light the bulb. You can work around this by adding a step-up transformer (which takes the incoming power and boosts it to the desired level for output, with no moving parts). Voila! You've illuminated your bulb. I will admit, though, you'll have to do some math to determine what you need. A search on the Web will help you find the formulae and other information you'll require. Good luck.

- If you do not isolate the solar system when backwashing your filter, you WILL pump DE into the panels and plug them and destroy them. At this point you may have to disconnect the panels, wash them from the RETURN SIDE (from the higher pipe and HOPE that the DE will flow out of the panels... most likely your pool guy just screwed up your solar real good... if the DE is plugging your panels, when winter comes your panels will split because they are holding water and the freezing water will split them... I hope your pool guy has insurance

- yes it is being done. i've seen adds for such a system. on the other hand, if you had a 5 sq in Lens focused on a small cell, and a 5 sq in cell, they'd be about the same. in fact, the cell might be a bit better because (A) there wouldn't be any loss in the Lens, and (B) it might be that the solar cell would use some frequencies to which the Lens was opaque. in addition, the cost of solar cells is dropping, making the cost of the mirrors or lenses uneconomical by comparison.

- Hi There Solar panels work better in space than in the atmosphere and wireless transmission of power is now becoming possible but rarely practical. Currently more practical would be orbiting geo stationary large scale mirrors focusing light on panels on earth. In another 50 years who knows? Energy being transmitted wirelessly generates heat and radiation. I suspect that if a powerful enough solar array to meet earthly needs was put in orbit then transmitting that sort of power through the atmosphere would cause issues all of its own. Regards vk4ari
- Q: Harbor Freight sells a 75 watt solar panel, a surge power inverter, and deep charge batteries. But no one there can tell me how to put it all together. - i wouldn't. - harbor freight isn't known for the best quality stuff. - 75 watts assumes roof mounting, at 90 degrees to the sun, on a bright day. you're going to get considerably less. and only when the sun is highest in the sky. maybe you should look at, your computer, for example. if you're using it for 4 hours, and it has a 500 watt power supply, and you add 200-500 watts for the monitor, and some for the printer, modem, etc, you'd use 5kw that day. your 75 watt panel, generating maybe 50 watts at most, for maybe 4 hours when the sun was highest, and shining directly on the panel, would generate 200 watt hours. it would take 25 days to generate the electricity you'd use in single day. in the winter, you'd be pretty much out of luck. there just isn't enough bright sun. clearly, it's up to you, but there's a harbor freight near me, and i'll not be rushing out to get such a system. further, most appliances are quite voltage sensitive. you really do need to have the voltage in the 0-20 range. too much out, either higher or lower, will shorten the life of appliances at best.
