Soft pads are cheap (money wise) and are a good start for learning the game. A metal pad is for serious players that want good scores on hard fast paced songs. The difference is that a metal pad is more pricey, more responsive to fast arrows, better control, and more heavier (so it won't move around as much.) Yeah, a metal pad is better than a soft pad. (that's why they cost so much ;))
