Q:I need to measure my tiles to get them cleaned but they all need the size in squares how do i do that, thanks in advance
In constrution terms a square is 100 sq ft.But that's pretty much only used for roofs.I think what you need here is a measurement in square feet To get it just measure the floor both ways and multiply. I.e. If the room measures 10 Ft X 10 ft then you have 100 sq ft
Q:It has been installed on a concrete slab for about five months now, could the slab not have cured right or is the tile layed wrong?
here's the deal about laying tile over a concrete slab. either the tiler has to essentially build a floor over the slab (slab, then firring strips, plywood subfloor, thinset, backerboard, thinset, tile), or must use what's called an 'isolation membrane' to install the tiles directly on the slab (slab, then membrane, thinset, tile). the isolation membrane is a self-levelling rubbery substance that thinset can adhere to, that allows the slab to crack underneath without the cracks propagating upwards through the thinset and cracking the tile. if the tiler did neither, it's almost a guarantee that eventually the tiles over the slab will crack. (yes, if the slab had not fully cured, that might have caused the crack underneath; however, most all slabs will eventually crack even if everything else is perfect. that's the reason for the isolation membrane.)
Q:I just finished my bathroom but when i used the oil based kilz there was a little spray back that landed on the tile floor.
Depending on the type of tile you might be able to use a sharp knife (exacto or paring knife) and gently remove the spots. If you have any kind of ceramic tile that would work (in my experience) except perhaps on the grouted areas. If you have grout and the Kilz is in/on the grout you might have to actually scrape some of the grout off and then reseal the grout. Good luck. It's laborious work but it should work. If you have linoleum tile I wouldn't do that because it might remove the finish. The next time you go to the paint dept. at the store ask them how to do it if you haven't solved the problem
Q:My house has shake roof. We plan to reroof this summer. Please let me know advantages and disadvantages of metal tile vs ceramic lieght weith tiles. Thanks!
There are clay, concrete and wood/cement fiber roof tiles, but I am not familiar with ceramic unless you are referring to the ceramic granules that are used to surface some brands of metal tiles. Metal tiles are durable, cost efficient and light weight. The ones with the ceramic granules will reflect more heat than the crushed stone ones, but the ceramic colors will fade more than the natural stone. Clay tiles are light weight and will last a lifetime, unless broken from impact, but you will pay dearly for the real clay. Clay is the color of the natural soil that is is made from so the color doesn't fade. Concrete is very heavy and is usually painted, so the finish eventually weathers off and you see the typical gray concrete color coming through. Since the concrete is so heavy, most structures require added support to firm up the roof deck. There are lighter weight concrete tiles available, but these are made with wood fiber filler and break very easily. Most structures will need framing support added for these also. For the best price, metal tile is a very good choice and most will have a manufacturers warranty for 50 years
Q:tile. any advice?
it kind of depends on the room its going in and what kind of contrast your personal style is suited to. that said, id go with a light grey or a light tan. if its in the a kitchen, go with a darker color that won't show stains as readily as a lighter grout color.
Q:whats the best way to remove it??? Put it on bathroom tiles but it is all chipping off and doesnt look pretty
if you painted right over ceramic tile it should come off with a razor blade scraper -- if the paint is in the grout you may never get it off there-- not sure what type of paint you used -- some oil paints can be removed with laquer thinner or paint thinner ---
Q:I have several boxes of wall tile and I would like to use some on a floor. Is this okay? What is the difference?
unless it is porcelain the make up of the tile is not strong enough to withstand the weight and traffic it would be up under
Q:Laying 225 Sq ft of 18x18 tile on flat slab. Using Ultraflex II thinset (white) w/ 1/16 spacers. Cannot find a 3/4 trowel to apply just to floor...can I use 1/2 sq notch trowel if I apply to floor and back of tile as well when I set them???

Q:I need to re-set some tiles on a roof that have slipped and replace some others. Also, I need to re seal my flashing around my vents. What am I getting into, and how hard is it to work on tile roof?
the tricky part to working on a tile roof is staying on it. and not cracking any additional tiles. usually when i repair a tile roof i set up scaffolding there are a bunch of reasonss . the tiles sre heavy and hard to handle on just a ladder, the scaffolding offers a nice work area, and most important its alot safer, you can go to any rental store and rent scaffolding, when resealing around flashing and vents use a rubber butyl caulk for longer durability
