Some spiders can release their legs, but only if given fair warning (a gentle tug). If the crane fly lost his leg violently, he will probably die from the injury. Whether or not the injury kills him, he will, of course, be more vulnerable to predators. Not to be morbid or cold, because I really do love animals, and hate to see harm come even to the under appreciated invertebrates, but the Crane fly usually only lives a couple of days, so as long as he mated, his job on earth was finished anyway.

Q: Tower cranes sometimes have very long booms, but seem to usually have fixed counter-weights at fixed positions behind the cab. Why doesn't it flip backwards when there is no load, or flip forwards when a load is way at the far outward end of the boom? Assuming stone, then you can't lift a stone wall unless you have a steel plate under it, as it will collapse otherwise. That gets complicated. Yes, you could build it with a 1/2 inch steel plate under it, and lift it that way, assuming it is not too long, and crane it into position, but you then have to slide the plate out without cracking the wall, also difficult. The plate is expensive, the crane is expensive. But what do you gain? You still have to demolish the old wall, you still have to build a new one, so what would you gain by building it somewhere else and moving it?
