- Q: Can solar panels be used in countries with limited sunlight?
- Yes, solar panels can still be used in countries with limited sunlight. While solar panels are most effective in areas with abundant sunlight, they can still generate electricity even in regions with less sunlight. Advances in solar technology and the ability to capture diffuse sunlight have made it possible for solar panels to be used in countries with limited sunlight. Additionally, the efficiency of solar panels has improved over time, allowing them to generate electricity even in low-light conditions.
- Q: I have an inverter and a battery 20 Amperes.Daily sun shine approx. 7 Hours.Do I need to buy anything or should I connect the solar panel to the Battery direct?
- No, don't connect the panel directly to the battery. You need to isolate the solar panel charging output from the AC-powered charger. A couple of high-current diodes arranged with their anodes connected to the charging sources in the positive supply line will allow either the charger or the solar panel to lift the voltage high enough to charge the battery, albeit with about 0.6 volts dropped across the diode. Both cathode ends would be connected to the battery. This arrangement allows a positive current to flow from either or both charging sources at the same time, although in practice, one will generally be higher than the other. Also, if the AC charger's voltage is significantly higher than the solar panel, the charger may always charge the battery. You would need to regulate its output to be slightly lower than the solar panel when it's near it's minimum useful operating voltage. (note that the 0.6 forward bias voltage on the diode might prevent the solar panel from completely charging the battery if it has any voltage regulation on its output)
- Q: What would these solar panels power? For instance, my energy bill shows 2035kWh for last month. How much would this remove from that if it outputted full power? Thanks!
- For okorder As for that kit you are looking at, that is more suitable for mounting on a travel trailer somewhere where you are camping to recharge the deep cycle battery for the low voltage appliances you are using. Right now is probably a good time to start looking at ways of either running on low voltage, say for general lighting in a basement, or shed, and putting up some means of maintaining those batteries with solar and or wind. If you start small, you can add on at any time.
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power a school?
- Yes, solar panels can definitely be used to power a school. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power various electrical systems within a school, including lighting, heating/cooling systems, computers, and other appliances. By harnessing solar energy, schools can reduce their dependence on traditional sources of electricity and contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment.
- Q: I'm going to this camp and the instructors asked us to be prepared tomorrow to build a sun tracker for a solar panel. Does any one have any ideas, tips, or advice?
- tbls0 has a good idea for the tracker, but let's take this one step farther. A clock motor large enough to move a solar panel, unless it is a very small one is going to be large, and expensive. Use the timer motor, as suggested, but attach a slotted disk to it, with a light source on one side, and a detector on the other side. As each slot comes up and allows light to pass through, this creates a one shot pulse which is used to cause a stepper motor to move position to keep the panel aimed at the sun. At the end of the panel travel for the end of the day, a switch could be set to close, bypassing the step control to put the motor into full constant speed reverse, this causing the panel to swing back to the morning position. The whole affair gets it's start up call by means of a light detector, similar to those used to turn lights off at sun up. The control would, of course be set to turn the system on to track the sun during the day. While some digital control is going to be needed, the system would not need a computer to run it.
- Q: Does San Francisco get enough sunshine to really make solar panels a viable option for creating a self-supporting home? Certainly a wind turbine would be a good source of energy, but what about solar panels? Does S.F. get enough sunshine to justify using solar panels? It's overcast a lot in the Bay Area, are there any solar panels better than others for a climate like this?
- Yes, San Francisco gets enough sunshine. That will vary depending on your site location, some are better than others. The best way to find out how much electricity your specific location can generate is to get a quote from a solar company. I am in the process of getting PV's installed on my home in the Sacto area and got quotes from 3 companies. My home is in a good, not optimal possition and depending on where on the roof I place the panels my efficiency will vary. Also depending on the brand of panels, some will take less square footage on the roof to produce the same amount of electricity. The price on all 3 were very close to each other. All 3 companies I dealt with gave a no cost/no obligation quote, and they were are very knowledgeable about the specific utility rebates I would be eligable for. I say it is well worth the time to check it out. My system should be going onto my roof in just a few more weeks. I was able to get nearly 50% of my cost refunded by my utitlity, plus my federal tax rebate. My system should be paid for in about 6 years.
- Q: How do solar panels affect the property's overall sustainability?
- Solar panels can significantly enhance a property's overall sustainability by harnessing renewable energy from the sun. They reduce dependence on fossil fuels, decrease carbon emissions, and contribute to energy independence. Additionally, solar panels can generate surplus electricity that can be sold back to the grid, further enhancing the property's sustainability and potentially providing financial benefits.
- Q: Well my dad has been into Solar panels for quite a while, his birthday is coming up and i want to get him a small minature one, so he can toy around with it and be able to use it as expirience for when he gets a bigger one. my dad has been doing ALOT of studying, and i've been looking online but idk what kinda kits to get so should i get a 0w kit, 5w kit, or 20w kit? which one would be best to fool around with and play with? thanks
- You should have your dad check out this site. Easy to learn and very effective. bit.ly/solar9WXBrw
- Q: I want to put a solar panel(s) on my roof. What components do I need besides the solar panels? solar power controller? wires? How do I hook it into my home's electrical system and about how much electricity could I generate and save? Would the panels pay for themselves over time? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

- Q: if you know the area of the panel can u calculate for the wattage or voltage of the panel..
- You need to know how many solar cells are in the panel and what is the rated current each cell will produce. This information should be listed on the panel. Each cell will produce from 0.5 to 0.55 volts DC per cell and each cell will produce a current that is dependent on the size of the cell and the type of material the cell is made from. If the cells are connected in series then the voltage of each cell will add together, that is if you have 30 cells connected in series they should generate about 5 to 6.5 volts DC. If each cell generates .2 amps, then you multiply the voltage of 5 volts DC times .2 amps DC equals 8 watts of power. The current of each cell does not add together when you connect the cells in series only the voltage of each cell. If you connect the 30 cells in parallel then the current of each cell adds together but the voltage of each cell does not. That is 0.5 Volts DC times 36 amps equals 8 watts. The power (watts) produced will be the same. See our blog on the products page to see how to connect solar cells in series and in parallel. We also have a PDF file of solar cells and their rated output current sorted by watts per area and their manufacturer.
