Q: I am restoring an older , but good piece of machinery. It sat for many years, so it's really really dirty and showing some rust and paint wear. I do not want to wash it and get water all over it so it starts rusting the gearing, and tooling surfaces. What do you recommend to start getting this beast clean, so I can work on it without getting really, really dirty? Is there a spray or should I use something like ...WD-40? How about the chemical RESTORE they show on the $19.95 TV Ads??? Used to restore the faded paint on a car or clean the headlight lens from oxidation??: There are degreaser products, but those are fairly aggressive and intended for really gummy congealed lubricant removal. WD-40, while less aggressive, is still a pretty good solvent as well as a light lubricant. If you need a lot of it, they sell it in 1 gallon cans (and probably larger sizes for industrial use), and they have pump sprayers to use with that size. I think a product for use on headlights or faded paint would be more of a polish than a degreaser, so that would not be appropriate unless you're trying to clean up a plastic viewing window or some such plastic guard, shield, etc.

Lots of different animals use simple tools or like Beaver have extravigent dams that would take engineers a lot of work to figure out. To be able to do what we do today took us thousands of years to learn from generation to generation. From the day a beavers born they know how to build dams.

Q: My neighbors just woke me up with extremely loud chainsaws!! Is there some rule about this??: It really depends on if there is a homeowners association because they usually have lots of rules you have to follow about when you can work and what you are allowed to have in the front yard... Anytime between 8 9am is perfectly acceptable, however it should also depend on the type of work that is being done. Severe stuff like chainsaws and jackhammering for a long period of time should start later and all neighbours should be warned via a note, phone call, or face-to-face interaction. Yet simple yard work like mowing and using a chainsaw to trim some stuff can start as early as 8am. Many people have a strange work schedules that cause them to stray from the typical 9-5pm shift or people have infants or can be sick... if you fall into one of these categories then you have the obligation of telling your neighbour. If they are cool about it and you approach them nicely then they can start later in the morning, but you have to be respectful of their schedule too. Or simply ask them when they plan on using the loud tools so that you can prepare yourself for it. Who knows, they might have plans later and this is the only time they can get the work done! You don't want to start the communications off on a bad foot because this will just create misery for you in the future. But if all else fails, look at your local ordinaces because there might be some sort of noise rules on file that most people are not aware of. Good luck, and remember to look at things from their point of view too! It will help!
