- Actually you do not NEED any kind of blanketDepending if your horse was stalled before you got it will play a factor in its comfort however! My horses growing up never had a blanketThey grow nice hairy coats to keep them warm and believe it or not the snow that falls also insulates themIf they were kept indoors up till now they may have a lighter hair coat so a winter blanket would help itStatelinetack has a good amount of blankets make sure you get one that repells water though or all your doing is making this worse.as far as weight goes with that it depends how hairy it is and how cold it gets there.my arab gets pretty hairy (however she's 19) and so when it gets to below zero I put on her blanket its not super heavy just enough to help keep her warmerIt is dark colored as well to help bring in warmth from the sun!
