- The reason upstairs is so hot is because there is no insulation in the attic, sidewalls, and roof which allows the heat to roast you upstairsYou setting the temp to 72 is costing you money that will never get the upstairs coolYou can try this: cold air is heavier than warm air so open the vents on the second floor and keep the lower ones closedThe cold air will go all upstairs and flow down the stair case to cool the first floorIt will help but you are still going to roast up there, so a portable a/c in the window might be the only way to tolerate itYou should keep this in mind with the fact you are renting to own, that 40 year old house is under insulated at best which will make your heating bills in the winter as bad as your electric bills in the summer because your heat is going to go right out through the roof as it rises to the second floor and then you will be dealing with ice dams in the winter and roof leaksSo freeze in the winter and roast in the summer, pay through the nose for heat and electricmaybe look into a more modern house?
