- Q: I'm from Toledo, OH about 2 miles from the MI line. We are a foster family and have adopted 5 children. We just moved into a 5400+sq 2 story home. We have (3) 2.5-3 ton AC units to cool this huge house. We got the house cheap...$75k couldn't pass it up! Anyway...I was wondering how many solar panels it would take and of what wattage to power these Central Air Units and maybe the rest of the house. We have 3 people in our home......9 of which are children who leave the lights on and run hot water to beat the band. We have all brand new energy star appliances and front loader washer and dryer. Gas Range and Gas hot water tank. Was thinking of using metal window frames and buying solar cells and making my own panels. Just don't know how much to buy. We face south with no trees. Constant Sun. thanks for your help. An e-mail address to bounce questions off of would be helpful if you experienced. tx.
- Yes and no. solar panels are expensive and inefficient. therefore the power you generate will cost many times what the same power from a power plant would, and therefore you generally can only run a few low powered things at once. Secondly they don't generate electricity at night so you need some means of storing the power. tht means even more efficiency losses. They also only generate DC power, so you have to run the power through an inverter to make 0V AC. inverters are notoriously inefficient and expensive as well, so now you've thrown even more power away converting it. Bottom line, you're gonna pay far more than $600 a month for these things and you won't get nearly the amount of power you think. it is generally a waste of money to do this in almost all cases. The ROI is usually well over 20 years before you break even.
- Q: what is one benifit in a solar panel?
- Solar panels enable use of sunlight for energy. Sunlight is a renewable resource, which means it won't run out, unlike coal and uranium (nuclear energy) and so forth. So there you go! It secures electricity for us for as long as the sun is there... which will be billions of years
- Q: I was wondering if they create other forms of energy besides electrical that is unwanted. Like heat due to the friction of something, or sound. Also why is a solar panel not able to collect 00% of the energy that is striking its panels. And how could the efficiency of this be hypothetically improved.
- figure it out for us
- Q: How long do solar panels last?
- Solar panels typically last for about 25 to 30 years, although some can continue to generate electricity for even longer with proper maintenance.
- Q: Are solar panels suitable for all types of roofs?
- Solar panels are suitable for most types of roofs, including flat, sloped, and metal roofs. However, the suitability may vary depending on factors such as roof orientation, shading, and structural integrity. It is recommended to consult with a solar installation professional to determine the best options for a specific roof type.
- Q: can you buy single solar panels say to power a washing machine fridge etc.if so where can i buy them from
- The only real purpose of solar panels these days is to charge batteries - they just don't generate enough energy to do anything else and its dependent upon light levels - ergo you need the backup. Also - very expensive.
- Q: I am starting to think about solar panels as an option for my home. I have done some research on panels, to be honest its all very confusing. There are many different panels some with 60 watts some all the way up to 20 watts. My household currently uses about 2700 to 3400 kWh every two months. So based off of my power usage maybe you can answer some of the following questions:What kind of panels should I be looking at?Which panel manufacturers give the best bang for the buck (reliable/affordable)?Anything else I should be concerned about?I am just starting out in educating myself on solar power so please excuse me if I sound very naive. Any information that you may have will be helpful. Thanks in advance.
- Unfortunately, I can't give you a lot of specifics on what you should use. However, I can tell you that the very best system for you simply might not be available to you, in which case it really doesn't matter how good it is. Your best bet would be to talk to a supplier in your area and see what is available, THEN start looking at the differences between those. Unfortunately, solar panels aren't quite to the point of being a common-place product...yet. Another thing to consider would be how old your roof is. You might want to look into the possibility of building-integrated materials if you are in need of a new roof. Talking with somebody who sells the panels in your area will help you understand a lot more than just doing raw research. Get their take on it, then fact check and research what they tell you so you know you're not getting ripped off.
- Q: lately i have been interested in solar power. i own my own home and in Texas it's HOT, so my A/C is always on and that light bill is like $300.00 a month. i was looking at other light companies but then i remembered that there are the so called solar power but i dont knowknow to start or how it would work to power the a/c machine...pls help
- We are in the UK, but we now have two systems, one which heats the water and the other generates electricity via PV panels. You need to have a roof area facing in the correct direction and at a suitable pitch. If the sun is hitting the roof at an oblique angle the loss of benefit is high. The system that heats the water has the fastest pay back time. Our water has been hot since we had the system installed despite a poor summer here. Over here we can export surplus electricity created by the PV panels back to the national grid, and they buy that surplus. We often have surpluses during the day, but obviously when it is dark and we use electricity, we sort of buy it back. In the 6 months since it was installed, we have generated about 85% of our needs. Our best day was when we generated 46% of our needs. As you may know, we have had rain and floods over here, but to-day we still generated 22% of our needs and we put on several loads of washing. we have kept a spreadsheet of all teh figures. We are very pleased with ours, and we got a grant, but it was very expensive for the PV system. i'd recommend it, though. i have grandchildren and I feel we have to do something to preserve resources for them and to help combat climate problems. Make sure you have done other things - such as made sure your insulation etc is as good as it can be.
- Q: How do solar panels affect roof weight load?
- Solar panels can increase the weight load on a roof, but their impact is generally minimal. The weight of solar panels is usually evenly distributed across the roof surface, and most roofs are designed to handle this additional load without any issues. However, it is recommended to consult with a professional to assess the roof's structural integrity and ensure it can support the added weight of solar panels.
- Q: Are there any government incentives for installing solar panels?
- Yes, there are various government incentives available for installing solar panels. These incentives can include tax credits, grants, and rebates. They aim to promote the use of renewable energy sources and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
