- Q: I've been figuring ways to keep water thawed out this winter, and this bucket seems to be the easiest thing. What kind of set up (solar panel) would I need to feed this 260 watt heated bucket?
- Unfortunately solar panels are low output,generally only 2 volt and very low amperage,so you would need to build a multi panel array with a DC-AC converter all together costing several hundred dollars which would only work during sunlight.Just roughly figuring,about $800. Plan2-Solar charger,battery bank,and DC-AC inverter so it would work 24hrs a day,also several hundred $$. Solar power does just not seem feasible(to me)in this application.By far the cheapest set up here would be an extension cord fromhouse to the bucket.260 watts per hr is a fairly lightweight draw,even not figuring the thermostat's cycling it on and off as needed.Electricity is sold in kilowatt hours(000W/hr).This bucket would use(not allowing for thermostats control lowering it)appx 6000watts or 6KW per day.Depending on your electrical cost per Kwh it would cost very little to run.(In my location appx 50cents a day) or appx the same amount as my computer(325watts total)) Note that that would be a maximum rate,and would actually be less due to thermostat cycling off and on as needed.

- I will give you the tools to answer your own question. Here is the solar resource map: rredc.nrel /solar/old_data/nsr... Use it to look up the hours of peak equivalent sunlight per day in your area. For example, let's say it's 5 hours / day. Then per year you get 365 x 5 = 825 hours of sun Your panel is 20 watts, or 0.2 kW So the energy produced per year is 825 x .2 = 383 kWh You'll have to use the proper numbers for your own area, of course. Anyway, you can take that 383 kWh and determine how much it would cost at local electric rates. Never know, on some islands, it's $.00 per kWh. Check with your local electric company for rates.

- Hey E Girl, photovoltiac panels are pretty simple. They start with a solid block of silicone, and shave thin layers off of them, called wafers. Once you have about 72 of them, you take half of them and dope them with boron, then the other half are doped with phosphorous. Once that's done, they take one each phosphorous and boron wafer, and glue them together with a special conductive epoxy glue, and attach a wire to each wafer. When the two glued wafers are exposed to the sun, a reaction occurs that forces free electrons from the silicone particles from one wafer onto the other, and a voltage is generated between them, about /2 volt to be exact. Once all 36 pairs are glued together, they are wired in series, connecting the phosphourous wafer from one to the boron wafer on the next, and so on. If you start with 72 wafers, you'll have 36 pairs glued together when you are done. At /2 volt each, that makes a 8 volt panel, which is used to charge a 2 volt battery. The charging source always has to have a few more volts than the battery. These 36 pairs of cells are then arranged on some kind of back board, glued down, covered with acrylic glass and mounted in a frame. Did you know that there are over 00,000 homes and businesses in the US alone that use some level of solar power to operate their electrical systems? That's good news. Given the fact that most of our energy comes from fossil fuels (Oil, Natural Gas and Coal) and that those resources are getting used up and more expensive to get to, and given the fact that solar panels are getting cheaper and more efficient, eventually, the electricity produced by solar panels (or photovoltaic panels as they are sometime called, PV for short) will be cheaper than that of CO2 spewing electrical plants. Actually, it could be argued that if the coal, natural gas and oil industry was not subsidized so much by our governments, and if you demanded that the process of producing electricity from those sourced be as clean as PV, PV would be a cheaper source of electricity than fossil fuel already. Make sure to also look into the solar panels that produce hot water. SHW (Solar Hot Water) is very developed in country such as Israel, where the law demands that all new house be build with SHW systems. Those panels are very efficient at capturing the heat of the sun and produce hot water much cheaper over their life than using gas or electricity.
