I install custom high-end tiles and I retailed such for many years. I have to say... just about every answer to this quesiton that I have read thus far is incorrect. If you do choose to use a glass mosaic tile, be sure and use one that is manufactured by a reputable company. I recommend Bisazza... IT IS GLASS, sold in the US, and its found in many European countries in social areas where people actually walk! Anotherwards, it is very durable, difficult to scratch and when installed correctly, nearly impossible to break. Also, with a glass mosaic tile, you want to be sure and use an epoxy grout. These grouts are much more difficult to install but will not stain, fade, or change color... EVER. As for cons... the first would be price. Bisazza starts at $8.00 a sq and that would be for a very basic looking glass mosaic tile. Also, if you're paying for the installation, contractors do get more money for installing glass... you need an installer that has experience installing glass (not just ceramic tile)... very important. Lastly, most contractors also get more money for installing the epoxy grouts... but whether you use glass or any other kind of tile on a COUNTER TOP, make sure you use epoxy grout so you don' t ever have to worry about stains and maintenance of your grout. I say if that's what you want... pay for it and do it. Tile installations are already costly and it's worth paying for what you want. I just can't stress enough that you want to use good material, a tile setter that is well-experienced working with glass, and an epoxy grout. Good Luck

Q:so i was wanting to lay some ceramic tiles down in a small room. right now in the room i think theres vinyl tiles and they r laid right on top of the pplywood floor. so im just wondering am i able to just lay the ceramic tiles right on top of the plywood floor after i tear up scrape up the old floor? any advice?: Zocko is correct. Also the concrete board underlayment should be screwed to the sub floor as recommended by the manufacturer. 8 o.c.? Also the joints in the concrete boards should be staggered to achieve maximum strength and not encourage long weak lines. If there is any deflection or movement noticed when heavy loads are moved across the floor after the concrete board has been installed, look for the reason and solve it. Otherwise you will be called back to fix grout pop outs and then you will have to solve the movement problem. If the plywood is less than 3/4 or the joist spacing is greater than 16 you should be concerned.

Q:We recently had new porcelain tile installed on our guest bath floor, and we‘d like to clean it regularly without harming the tiles and grout. The tile installer had no recommendations about this process, nor did the tile company where we made the purchase. Researching this info is very confusing. Q:hi i live in a upstairs flat,and i want to tile my hall with ceramic tiles,i did a square 4 foot patch to see if the tile would stick or would come loose,well they did come loose,so how do i prepare floorboards for tiling over so the grout wont crack when i walk on the floor thanks: You can, but it's a gutsy try. Hardwood flexes, expands and contracts with temp. humidity and wear. Those are things you DONT want when setting tile. If you really really want to try this without removing the hardwood, it will take some money and time. First like others above mentioned, find a cement backer. Hardibacker and Durarock are brands sold at Home Depot. I would recommend getting the thicker 1/2 sheets as that will help dampen the flex. Then you will want an anti-fracture membrane to coat the backer with. This stuff helps allow the floor to move (slightly of course) without cracking your grout and popping tiles. Next buy a heavily latex modified mortar. It usually has a higher psi strength and also allows for some give. It's more expensive, but it's cheaper than doing the job twice. I'm personally a fan of TEC's SuperFlex mortar, but every tile guy has their favorite. When you go to actually install the tile (after the backer is in and the membrane is dry) use a deep trowel. In these situations, I use a 1/2 trowel. Spread the mortar evenly, and place each tile with the same amount of pressure. This will save time trying to keep the tiles level. When grouting also find a latex modified mix for it as well. Use that stuff instead of water. Hope this helps and you actually read the whole thing. I didn't mean to write a book.

Q:We are in the process of buying a Fannie Mae home which is in very good condition. We did however find a hairline crack on about 6 of the 12 x 12 tiles in the master bathroom floor. The Home Inspector said there are no signs of foundation problems on the outside of the home. He said because we live in Texas the ground settles and expands and this could have caused the crack. Because there are no signs of foundation troubles on the outside of the home as long as we water the foundation we shouldn‘t have any problems. There is also a door that closes on it‘s own which indicates there could be a crack? However it‘s just one door out of about 12. Should we be worried or does the inspector know what he‘s talking about.: you shouldn't be worried the door is probably just off balance and inspector knows what he is talking about.
