Q: Can solar panels power a whole house?
Yes, solar panels can power a whole house. With the right number of solar panels installed and optimal sunlight exposure, they can generate enough electricity to meet the energy needs of a typical household. However, it is important to consider factors such as the size of the house, energy consumption, and storage options to ensure a reliable and consistent power supply.
Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
Most solar lamps use a single .2V nicd or nimh battery as a back-up supply, so they should be able to generate at least .5V in full sun to allow charging of the battery (you can verify the voltage of a single panel with your DMM) If you have two of these panels, I wouldn't expect them to make more than approximately 3V. The proper connection would be a series connection where the negative of one panel connects to the positive of the other and the remaining positive and negative wires become the outputs. Try this connection and measure again with your multimeter set to DCV and the panels in full sun. If the voltage is not high enough, add a third panel wired with its positive lead to the remaining negative of the first two. This should bring your voltage up another 50 percent. When you wire the panels positive to positive, negative to negative as you already have, voltage will be that of one panel, but current output will double (more amps) If you have many of these panels, you could combine series and parallel wiring to increase voltage and current.
Q: What direction do solar panels usually point? North? East? South? West?
South in the northern hemisphere. - this gives you sunlight on the panel a major portion of the day without the need for a mechanism to follow the sun or change direction from E to S to W as the day progresses
Q: can u use a light bulb instead of the sun to power a solar panel
Solar Powered Light Bulbs
Q: Can solar panels be installed on south-facing windows?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on south-facing windows as long as the windows receive sufficient sunlight throughout the day.
Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of snow or ice?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of snow or ice. However, the efficiency of solar panels may be reduced during these conditions. Regular maintenance and snow removal are necessary to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, tilted solar panel installation and using anti-reflective coatings can help minimize snow accumulation.
Q: I am in the market for buying a home. There is one for salke that actually has solar panels on top. How are they used? Do you need to pay for gas and electric still. Does it really light up the house and keep it warm. WHat about the AC keeping hte house cool in the summer does it work for that too? Please explain in solar for dummy terms. I haveno clue about solar panels other thatn the fact that it needs sunlight to run.
No standard home can operate on solar panels alone unless there is about an acre or more of them. Plus, they require lots of batteries and complicated switching devices. And, they are very expensive, so rarely pay back their up front cost. Right now, more of a gimmick than a practical solution to power needs in the home. The house you're looking at may use it to power emergency lighting in case the grid went down. Or maybe a small fan to exhaust heat out of the attic. Who knows. Just have to ask.
Q: Are the solar panels on the roof just a gimik to get all the tree huggers to buy it, or are they actually a good, efficent design?
The solar panels run the fan to remove hot air from the car. They do about the same amount of cooling that cracking the windows and using a heatshield over the windshield--that is they keep the interior of the car about the same as the exterior without draining the 2V battery. One problem I have with the solar panels is that they come with a moonroof. The other problem I have with them is that to get them you have to give up the additional safety features because Toyota won't put both the high tech safety features and the solar panels on the same car. So is it a good design? Well, nothing with a sun/moonroof is a good design IMHO, but that's the power of advertising for you. In that it runs a fan without draining the 2V battery, yes that part's good. Having to give up the high tech safety features to get it makes it a non-starter for me (and I live where it gets plenty hot so I could really use the fan).
Q: Has anyone had roof problems caused by rooftop solar panels?
Rooftop solar panels might cause all sorts of maintenance or poor installation problems but I rather doubt at this point if we can say that there is an issue with solar panels in general that will cause a problem with the roof. Rather solar panels tend to shade a roof on its most exposed side. Without solar panels southern facing roofs will wear out faster than northern facing roofs. Installed solar panels will tend to make the roof last longer.
Q: I was told by a veteran that jcpl had a program that installs free solar systems for disabled vets.If this is true who do i contact?
yes. there is a free solar panel program for veterans.
