Also, depending on the reacting metal a hydroxide or an oxide is produced. When you look at the electrochemical series of metals then the first metals, the active ones (Li - Mg/Al), form a hydroxide when reacting with water. For example: 2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2. Metals from Mn to Fe form an oxide (when heated - water must be in a vapourised state). For example: Zn + H2O -> ZnO + H2. Metals starting from Ni don't react with water. I wrote Mg/Al when talking about active metals because normally the surface of aluminium is protected by its oxide and therefore the reaction doesn't take place very easily. A cathode is a powerful reducing system. If you try to do a displacement reaction, you would need a more reactive metal than the one you are trying to extract. Even if possible, it would be very expensive and dangerous to handle.
