- Q: What would be the best safety routine to follow when earthquake strikes given the fact that the building I live in is not anti-seismic, and what are the proper equipments?
- If your new handle set is Kwikset or Schlage, then the plunger can be installed for either a 2 3/8 or one that is 2 3/4, so most likely you've got the part that goes from one side to the other in the wrong one. Take the two screws out of the knob, push the plunger to the outside of the door and put the rod through the outer of the two holes. Some of them require you to remove the plunger and manually change it, so just remove the two screws on the side of the door, take the plunger out, and change the setting to 2 3/4. Replace everything and you should be good to go. It's probably in the fine print in the instructions, possibly in French. If your door was manufactured in the past 30 years or so, it should have been drilled to one of those two standards and you've probably got it set on the shorter one, so take it out, readjust, and reinstall. I doubt you've got any other issues as all the screws should have gone back in the same holes, especially if you replaced the lock with the same brand. Do the keys have the same head shape? Then it's the same manufacturer and everything should line up so the only thing that could cause your problem is that you've got it in the 2 3/8 backset position rather than 2 3/4. Common mistake and an easy fix. You've probably got more important things to worry about and wish they were all this easy to solve, right?

- Iceman Also, I'd have the gas company come back out to check the system now if they refuse to light it, ask them to give you a written notice of why they would not light it. If you are burning natural gas, a yellow flame means that the burner is dirty and not getting enough air. This can lead to carbon monoxide problems. I'm not a doctor either, however, you might also have an allergy to natural gas or burning natural gas. Good luck
- Q: I don't care if your going to say its uncomfortable or anything. But when you take them out do they go all wonky cause you kept them in for ages?
- If there is a zinc coating on the stainless steel / bronze parts , then any acid would be suitable. My personal choice would be hydrochloric acid - old as muriatic acid or brick cleaner in hardware stores. I would stay away fro nitric acid - it has the potential to damage the substrate - particularly bronze. As with all strong / dangerous / corrosive chemicals, wear proper safety clothing particularly eye protection , long rubber gloves that cover the forearms and a waterproof / plastic apron. Wash any spills away with plenty of water.

- its gonna be roughly, umm, 28 g/mole Thats actually heavier than most of the air (Nitrogen/Oxygen etc) But, I'm not sure if density really matters with gases, so just stick it on the celing, or near a boiler or somewhere that could emit CO.
- Q: I read the MSDS on Phenol:Chloroform:IAA solution -and geez, it seems scary to work with. - Yes, you should have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. And if you want to really do it right, one for each floor. ANY appliance which burns fuel is capable of emitting CO gas, if the wrong conditions occur. CO gas is emitted by fuel-burning appliances which are either improperly tuned (get a yearly furnace tune-up/check-up by a licensed repair tech!) or which does not receive enough oxygen to produce a clean burn. Chemically speaking, the CO molecule has one less oxygen atom than the CO2 atom, which is what you normally get when you burn a fuel, guess where the CO goes to get that extra oxygen from - YOUR BODY! Don't let this happen to you. When CO is emitted, it is an odorless gas. Some people think that they will smell an odor if CO is emitted from an appliance, but this is wrong. Further, CO will cause people who are sleeping to fall into a deeper sleep, unable to do anything about the problem and dying in their sleep. A CO detector is a very cheap lifesaving tool which is as important as the household smoke detector and a basic all-purpose fire extinguisher.
