- Improve? for car camping add a durable tarp under the tent as a foot print and inside the tent put down what is called a furniture pad or a carpet. These two items will protect the tent floor from damaging tent furniture, boots and ground moisture. For backpacking I do the same thing but weight becomes an issue I use a poly painters tarp under the tent and a backpackers insulation pad. For repairs I use duct tape that fixes anything.

- First of all, anything is possible. We need to be realistic though as to just how much of the systems can be replaced at a reasonable cost. Contrary to what has been stated, it is absolutely possible to have lead pipe in a home including the service and waste lines. If your home is old enough it could have portions of the waste line that are lead and connect to cast iron mains. I can't honestly say though that I have seen a water supply system in a home that was lead past the meter. Pex as mentioned in the other replies is the best way to go from both a cost and ease of installation standpoint and if your home is a ranch style home with an open basement it will be easier to do all the piping in a new material than in a two story. I would never try to quote a job like this sight unseen or even try to tell you that it should cost no more than a certain amount. There are too many variables involved and we as Plumbers are doing you a disservice to tell you otherwise. As mentioned before get at least three quotes from reputable Plumbers in your area and don't be afraid to ask for references and ask lots of questions. Regards, Indy

X 6’ galvanized water pipe, threaded on one end. Purchase a pipe to hose fitting and hook up to your garden hose. Turn the water on and sink the probe into the ground. The water will do the digging. Set up a grid pattern and probe every foot or two until you find the tank. Legally, septic tanks can be no closer than 5’ from the house, so begin 6-7’ from the house. The top of a concrete septic tank is about 5’x 8’ and is usually 2-4’ beneath the surface. Typically, the septic tank is in the front yard. I said TYPICALLY, so don’t be surprised if the systems in the rear yard or under a patio slab, etc. We’ve seen um everywhere. If you smell the problem, this probably indicates the leach field beyond the septic tank is probably saturated also. It might need replacement.
