They switch because their child is growing up, and is ready to transition from an infant bed, to one that resembles a grown-up bed. There's really nice difference between a twin size bed and a toddler bed either, except that the toddler bed is closer to the ground. Which is good, because that means the child can get in and out of bed on her own, plus if there is a roll-out, it's not going to cause any damage. And, a crib is only safe is the child is not trying to climb out every time he/she is placed in there. If your child is continually trying to get out of a crib, then no, it's not safer.

But if you have a fitted sheet and a sleeping bag or comforter on it, you would just have to wash that bedding periodically and not worry about tucking in sheets as our mothers used to so meticulously do. There are bunk bed/desk combos available in catalogs and furniture stores that fulfill your needs. Not a loft, but a bunk bed might be just what you're looking for. If space is not too tight, I prefer the traditional bed and desk, as your bed always doubles for other uses (putting on shoes, folding clothes, you get the idea....). Hope this helps.
