Q:I remember my dad saying something about steel toed boots but I forgot =#92; I went and checked out all the stores and got a pair with good ankle support but they also have steel toes. Would this interfere with the shifter or anything? I figure if anything my dirt bike shoes have the steel toes too. Any opinion?
Very good to have steel toed boots while riding
Q:If rebar steel is welded together as opposed to 'tied' does it decrease the strength of the steel?
The answer is it depends. I am not sure what steel alloy is used for rebar (there are hundreds of different steel alloys available commercially and different degrees of quality within any particular alloy and product form) but I assume it is a plain low carbon steel with a very simple heat treated condition. Welding does NOT increase the strength of steel, at least it does not in almost all cases (there are, of course, exceptions). A welded joint may be stronger than a tied joint but it depends on how the tied joint is tied and it depends on how the welded joint is welded. Crappy welds will not be as strong as well designed and executed tied joints. There are good reasons for different certifications for welders. With very little training and a little eye-hand coordination, anybody can learn to make farmer welds but sophisticated high quality welds in advanced steel alloys takes real skill, knowledge, and experience.
Q:What are the different types of steel coatings for coils?
There are several different types of steel coatings available for coils, each offering unique properties and benefits. Some of the most common types include: 1. Galvanized Coating: This is the most widely used type of steel coating for coils. Galvanized steel is coated with a layer of zinc, which provides excellent corrosion resistance and protection against rust. It is ideal for outdoor applications or environments with high moisture levels. 2. Galvannealed Coating: Galvannealed steel is a type of galvanized coating that undergoes additional heat treatment, resulting in a matte finish and improved paint adhesion. It offers enhanced corrosion resistance and is often used in automotive and construction industries. 3. Aluminized Coating: Aluminized steel is coated with a layer of aluminum, which provides excellent heat resistance and corrosion protection. It is commonly used in exhaust systems and other high-temperature applications. 4. Organic Coatings: Organic coatings, such as paint or powder coatings, can be applied to steel coils to provide additional protection against corrosion, as well as aesthetic appeal. These coatings come in a wide range of colors and can be customized to meet specific requirements. 5. Tin Coating: Tin-plated steel coils are coated with a layer of tin, which offers excellent solderability and corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of cans and other food packaging materials. 6. Phosphate Coating: Phosphate coatings are typically applied as a pre-treatment before other coatings to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance. They create a thin, crystalline layer on the steel surface, promoting better paint or powder coating adhesion. These are just a few examples of the different types of steel coatings available for coils. The choice of coating will depend on the specific application requirements, considering factors such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, paint adhesion, and aesthetic considerations.
Q:I was wondering if anyone knew the grade/type of steel for this product. I'd like to use it as stock for a knife blade, but would like to know the specs so I can determine if it is suitable and, if so, how best to heat treat it.Thanks.PS: I know it isn't stainless, but that leaves a lot of other steel types.
1018 mild steel. Not suitable for bladesmithing. If you can't heat treat find an old file, grind it out (keep it cool) and put in an oven 400F. Modern car/truck springs are 5160 med chrome steel, a good blade quality steel and forgiving on the anvil/heat treat.
Q:Are steel coils susceptible to damage during storage or transportation?
Steel coils can be damaged easily when they are stored or transported. They are quite heavy and can easily become deformed, bent, or scratched if they are not handled properly. It is also important to stack and secure them correctly during transportation to prevent them from shifting or moving, as this can also lead to damage. Moreover, the steel coils can be affected by moisture, extreme temperatures, or corrosive substances, which can compromise their quality. Therefore, it is vital to handle, store, and transport steel coils with great care to minimize the chances of damage and maintain their overall integrity and usability.
Q:i have a sword and some knives that have this grade steel. so is it a high grade or low grade? and how can i tell the differance between a high grade and a low grade?
I own a claymore made of 440 stainless steel, I cut a small tree in half. I was surprised, I mean I had always heard it broke very easily, but tell that to the tree. In other words it is a strong metal, but I don't sugest you tempt fate and try to break it because you will. As far as high grade the higher the grade the better the blade looks. If your looking for something to swing around, listen up Damascus is a good steel and Superalloys are probably the best. Take it from me, i'm an expert in using a sword and you'll only get hurt. Most of the time when you swing a sword you wound yourself and don't know it. When you swing the hilt of the sword also presents a problem, it can wound you too. Infact if you can't live with being cut up all the time don't pick up a sword. I cut my hands all the time and i'm a professional so you would probably kill yourself trying. Of course I do use heavy swords, but you can still hurt yourself with a light sword. So don't attempt anything stupid for your sake.
Q:mass of steel ball=66.80 gramsdiameter of steel ball=2.51 cm
To calculate the density of any object you will always use the formula: Density = Mass / Volume (P=M/V). You have recorded the known values of the mass and the diameter of the ball (sphere), so we have everything needed to calculate the Density. Mass is 66.80g, but we shall need to use another formula to calculate the volume of the sphere. The formula to use is 4/3 X Pi X radius cubed. However, first of all we need to turn your measurement of the diameter of the steel sphere into the radius of the steel sphere (So that it can be substituted in place of the “radius” in the above formula). Simply half the diameter to find the radius. So 2.51 cm divided by 2 is 1.255 cm. Now insert the radius 1.255cm into the above formula. It would be read like this: 4/3 X 3.14159… X 1.255 ?cubed (OR 4/3 X 3.14159 X 1.255X1.255X1.255), = 8.2798. So, now we know that the sphere has a volume of 8.2798 cm cubed, we can use this number in place of the “V” in the density formula P=M/V, and we can also substitute in the Mass (66.80g). So now P=66.80 / 8.2798, which = 8.07g/cm cubed. Now we know that from your measurements, steel has a density of 8.07g/cm cubed! This is fairly close to the real life average density, which if I remember correctly is around 7.8 g/cm cubed. Just remember, though, that as steel is an alloy it’s density is not standard and varies due to carbon content etc. Anyway, I hope that helped you!
Q:I know that the steel is significantly harder than when air cooled, but why is the quenched steel harder?
When steel is slowly cooled, lots of carbon diffusion takes place because it is not very soluble in steel at room temperature. The carbon is in solution at high temperatures, and is rejected out of the lattice as it cools. And when this happens, the microstructure will consist of ferrite and pearlite, and the lattice structure will be base centered cubic (bcc). If it is cooled fast enough, then the carbon gets trapped in the interstitial sites of the lattice and distorts it to a body centered tetragonal (same as bcc, but elongated in one direction) This elongation strains the lattice and makes it harder. Also, when cooled fast enough the atoms do not have time to diffuse like they normally would and they shear into place. This forms the hard phase of martensite that is desired of heat treated steel. But then it must be tempered back some because it is too brittle.
Q:looking for a good pocket knife. i keep going through these 440 steel pocket knives with every day work usage. this will be my 4th. even when i use a whetstone they stay sharp for a short period of time but the edge does not last, 440 is too soft! what is a good steel to look for in a pocket knife? also what are some good brands. ive been using gerber and buck sofar. if you could recommend me a few mid/small sized knives i would greatly appreciate it!
Best Steel For Pocket Knife
Q:How are steel coils shipped internationally?
Steel coils are typically shipped internationally using cargo ships or freight trains. The coils are securely loaded onto flatbed or container vessels, ensuring they are properly secured to prevent any damage during transportation. This method allows for efficient and cost-effective transportation of large quantities of steel coils across the globe.
