- Q: i was looking into making solar panels to reduce my electric bill, but i need to know how to actually hook it up.
- nowing what to do with unused renewable electricity is always a dilemma – hooking up to the grid has to be the preferred option. If your residential home is grid tied, i.e. connected the electricity grid as opposed to off-grid and you are using solar panels to generate electricity. Then it makes a lot of sense to hook your solar panels to the grid, because instead of losing the unused electricity or having to maintain a bank of deep cycle batteries, you simply feed it back to the grid. You feed electricity back to the grid via your electric meter which measures the electricity in Kilowatt per hour. This has the effect of reversing your meter which in turn reduces your electricity bills and if you are generating a lot of electricity you could find the utility company owing you money! The Solar Powered System Therefore, your solar powered installation would look like this. The solar panel will connect to an “array disconnect” – you need an array disconnect for system maintenance because it allows you to easily shut off the power. The array disconnect is connected to an “inverter”. The solar panel generates DC power and the electricity from the grid is AC power. Therefore, you need an inverter to convert DC power to AC power. The inverter is connected to an “AC breaker panel”. This is the interface where your solar generated electricity meets the electric meter and allows you to feed electricity back to the grid. Now in most countries and states you are not allowed to tamper with the electric meter so at this point you should contact your local electricity energy supplier and ask them to supply an engineer to hook you up to the grid. If you have anything to add to this article or you have connected your system to the grid – tell us how you did it by writing a comment below.
- Q: I want to install a solar panel on my car. I want to know that how much energy can be generated by a panel of size 4 foot by 6 foot. and the cost of installation.
- A little more than 0 watts per square foot, so that size panel would generate 250 watts under ideal conditions, which is noon on a sunny but not too hot day, near the equator. That's about /3 horsepower, or the same power as a man working hard. That is larger than needed to keep the battery of the car charged, unless you plan to run a laptop or something off it at night. The power is also too small to power the car for driving. If it's an electric car, you could get maybe another 2 miles per day out of the car, again, under ideal conditions. An RV store might have an idea of how much installation would cost. They would be accustomed to solar panels for RV's, but probably not small cars. A panel of that size would cost perhaps $500-800 just for the panel.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a boat?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a boat.
- Q: I am interested in solar energy, but am not sure how eficiant it would be in the northwest? Any comments would be apriciated.
- Are solar panels a good thing to do for the environment? - Yes. Can you recoup the cost your investment in the solar cells/panels in any reasonable amount of time in Seattle? - most likely - not. I know it's been a miserable spring in Seattle, but, I think we got 3 sunny days last month. With the number of cloudy/rainy days here, solar will only really benefit you in June, July, August and September. There are two kinds of solar panels - electric or water based. The electrics - photovoltaics - are costly to purchase and it's difficult to store the electricity once you make it. A water heater type solar panel initially cost less and can provide some benefit even on partly cloudy days. I have even seen instructions on how to build your own (if you are frugal and handy) I just do not think it's worthwhile in Seattle - if it was Denver or Phoenix we were talking about - then it would be a different story.
- Q: does it mean that it can get that much in a day? Or like, in an hour?
- That means it can handle UP TO 00W at any given time in bright sunlight. Volts x Amps = Watts. This means you can use of these panels to supply a 9 volt DC appliance at amps. Which is a pretty ridiculous amount of amps for a 9 volt product. About 5 of the 65 Watt panels will give you in excess of 825W of power, which will give you 5kWh per day. But, remember that's DC. When you convert to AC, that changes. I would suggest keeping batteries for storage. Also, You might require an average of 825 W per hour, but at any given time, you'll use a higher peak. You need to find out what the PEAK is before you can decide what to get. That would be with all the lights on in your house, running the vacuum, the dryer, and the washing machine. I think most houses are built with 00Amp breakers. That's 2 kilowatts at one time. That would mean you would need 72 panels to be at the PEAK your house can handle. You'll hopefully never use 2kW at one time. But there's no way for me to know what YOUR peak will be. I think the average kW peak demand is somewhere in the range of 2 kW. That would require 3+ panels.
- Q: i have 2 questions.. I have a 6v solar panel, if i wanted to charge batteries with that it what batteries could i charge? Could charge normal AA batteries with it our do i need special batteries.2. I have a 6v solar panel that produces watt. I want to light a bulb with it but whenever i hook it up the solar panel won't light it up. I think the current of the solar panel is too low. How can i increase the current of the solar panel
- [] Use it to charge 4 pieces AA cell ( connect in series to make 5V battery pack ) for 0 to 4 hours. Good for cell rated 600mAH ,2000mAH,2500mAH. [2] Cannot increase current. Buy some more this panel and hook them together in parallel to increase current. You need at least ten pieces to make current reaches .6A to light up some 6V bulbs.
- Q: Ok so I am planning on buying a solar panel. I am doing it to possibly sell the energy that it stores. It is a 20 watt panel so I am just wondering if every week or month if I sold that energy that it stored would make me a good profit. I am not hoping for thousands of dollars a month..just like 00? The solar panel cost me $,00 so if so, how long do you think it would take to make good profit. Also, how much would I make every week or month?
- I will give you the tools to answer your own question. Here is the solar resource map: rredc.nrel /solar/old_data/nsr... Use it to look up the hours of peak equivalent sunlight per day in your area. For example, let's say it's 5 hours / day. Then per year you get 365 x 5 = 825 hours of sun Your panel is 20 watts, or 0.2 kW So the energy produced per year is 825 x .2 = 383 kWh You'll have to use the proper numbers for your own area, of course. Anyway, you can take that 383 kWh and determine how much it would cost at local electric rates. Never know, on some islands, it's $.00 per kWh. Check with your local electric company for rates.
- Q: can you buy single solar panels say to power a washing machine fridge etc.if so where can i buy them from
- Electicity okorder
- Q: Me and my friend have made our own functional solar panels for considerably less than retail prices and we are thinking about selling them. Are there any legal issues regarding this? Would I need any special licenses or anything? Would using brand name components or parts in the panels make any difference legally? I want to know before I just go out and start doing it. Thanks!
- Would those be heating panels, or electric panels? If the latter, you would not have any safety certifications (I assume), so the panels would be illegal to use for a serious, grid-tied system. You would need to make this clear to your customers, that they could only connect to stand-alone systems. If this is in the US, there is always some finite danger of lawsuits if your product is defective. If the water heater leaks or blows up on someone's roof, you might have to go to court to defend yourselves. Even if you disclaim all warranties, in some states, if you sell something as a water heater then it has to heat water reasonably, and also not be hazardous. In other words, fit for its purpose. Check your local laws.
- Q: i just took a trip to florida, they are cutting down anything that doesnt float and putting up buildings. Most of these cost a bundle, bill gates may pay cash for them, but most people will have many payments. Since pools, satellite dishes, and docks if near the water seem to be standard issue, why not a couple solar panels and water heater. It is florida after all, and if you are allready paying a half million or so for a house, what is another 0k gonna mean to you. Why dont they make it mandatory to include these on all new housing and condos and businesses. With that many the price would come down quickly and pay for itself long before the house is payed off and/or florida is flooded due to global warming.
- Because not only does that just make TOO much sense, it comes down a cost factor, even though, as you say, what's another couple K for saving the environment. Sad thing is, even though they *JUST* figured out that global warming (loved that news story a couple weeks ago) is caused by humans abusing the earth, Americans especially just don't care enough. Our culture is so spoiled now that we refuse to be told what we need if it's not what we want or if it will cost us $5 extra.
