- Q: So I am working on the first row which I think is called the chain linkHowever, as I am going, I don't like the resultsSome parts are tight and some are loose with obvious holesDoes this matter? Should I keep it tight or loose? Someone somewhere said you should hold everything loosely to make it easierBut this seems to lead to the holes.and doing it tightly, is harder to get the needle through the holeNot to mention, I'm not even sure how I could manage to do each stitch perfectly uniform with the restJust the slightest pull seems to make it different than the next.
- It's called the foundation chain as opposed to turning chains or chain loops or chain spacesThe foundation chain is the beginning of a project, upon which the project is built, like the foundation of a houseIn the grand scheme of crochet, you would prefer that your foundation chain be a bit larger than your other stitches, so you might even use a larger hook to make themBut for now, it is better for them to be too loose than too tightOver time, your chains will become more consistent in sizeWhile it is true you do not want tight chains, neither do you want loose onesSnug each chain just enough that the head of the hook will just slide throughNo more than that, but also not so tight that the hook doesn't pass through easilyLike I said: it's practiceIt helps if you support the chain with extra fingers from your left handSo you've got your left index finger sticking up, and the yarn is going around itTake your middle finger and thumb, and use them to pinch your chain a couple of links from the hookEvery 2-3 chains, more your pincher closer to the hook againThis will help keep a more even tension on both the yarn and the chains and should help you make chains that are more evenWhat I recommend is making a short chain foundation, say 15 chains, and then work back and forth over that, practicing your various stitches (such as single crochet and double crochet)Just do it with some scrap yarnWhen you're done, you'll have a square more or lessYou can use it as a coaster or pot holder, or give it to your catCats naturally love all fiber artsBut primarily it will be a practice piece, like scratch paper, for you to get your stitch tension consistentThey do not need to be perfectly uniformThere is such a thing as close enough that no one will notice once you've put the regular stitches into themBut to see that happen, you'll have to take the leap and try itHence the swatch (a practice bit of crochet, like a doodle).
- Q: I've been using a Conair $30 hair straightener for about 3 months, and i've noticed that my hair has thinned outIs this because of the straightener that i use or something else? i'm 14Should i invest in a more expensive one? What brand would you suggest?
- You MUST use thermal protection on your hair when you straighten itI use CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection SprayIt is about $ 10-13 a bottleThermasilk makes a less expensive sprayYou SHOULD be using a ceramic straightenerI used to use Revlon's ceramic straightener until I switched to the CHIThe CHI is awesome Also, when you straighten, you MUST straighten small sections at a time, sloooowwwwwlly moving from the base of your hair to the end, one time per piece of hairGoing over the hair too fast won't straighten it enough, so you will have to do it againGoing over the same piece of hair fast, over and over again causes your hair to breakthin hair.
- Q: benefits?

- Q: I was wondering if there is a good insulation like a gel or a substitute that helps food stay cold for longer periods of timeSomething that acts like water that can hold cold for long periods of time but handles large heat like a microwave but will keep its heat wellIs there such thing? Please help!
- There's two things hereInsulation will keep the heat from outside getting in (to the food), but something like ice that is right next to it (and inside the insulation) will take heat from the food itselfSo they work together to keep the food cold, but in different waysAs ice changes to water (at 32F/0C) it absorbs a lot of heat, and the same phase change effect is used in a freezer block Insulation will also keep hot things hot, and something like a pocket hand-warmer could, perhaps be used to generate heat (again through a phase change) With the added advantage that it doesn't start doing so until the little clicker in the sachet is activatedNot sure if they are safe near food, though! Similarly, melted wax will give out a lot of heat as it solidifiesWhich would be interesting, but again, not very practicalThe self heating cans of food (and coffee!) generate heat by a chemical reaction as water reacts with quicklimeHighly dangerous if it goes wrong, but it worked for me!
- Q: Sometimes, when hubby and I leave for the day, one of our dogs will tear the fibers from our carpetHe doesn't do it all the time; we'll leave toys in there for him to chew, but lately he eats the carpetWe live in an apartment and I know we'll have to pay for damagesIs there any way I can prevent this from happening?
- Applesauce is just apples that have been cooked and pureedIt is very good as a snack.
- Q: i what to make my BF a scarf for xmasthing is i don't have any red yarnis there any thing i can use in nature either around my house or cheaply from the supermarket to dye my white/creme/pale yarns to red? if so how do i fix the color and make it last? i know nothing of dying and i live in central NC if that helps.
- no don't do it far to small for the flotation needed.
- Q: I have the flu and when I woke up my left eye was a little tender and green mucus was coming outAny idea why and how can I treat it?
- It could just be natural discharge as the eyes lubricate themselves.but if there is pain or discomfort with the green discharge you could have pink eye.have you gotten anything in your eye lately irritants like soap eyelashes or any kind of fibers from a blanket animal or clothing can cause irritation and discharge.go to the dr if your concerned its best to get checked out anyways.better safe then sorry I always say
