1. The Introduction of Solar Module
Solar modules use light energy from the sun to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The majority of modules use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin-film cells based on cadmium telluride or silicon. The structural (load carrying) member of a module can either be the top layer or the back layer. Cells must also be protected from mechanical damage and moisture. Most solar modules are rigid, but semi-flexible ones are available, based on thin-film cells.

- Q: I have a cabin that is way out in the middle of no where, it would cost 000's of dollars to get power to it. If I have a 8,000 BTU air conditioner that runs on 25 volts and 5 amps (or 875 watts)How many solar panels will I need to run this during the day, plus charge the batteries to run it all night? How many batteries would I need
- OK, in addition to the solar panels, you wil need an inverter (DC to AC; 2V t0 20V) capable of delivering 20A continuously and as much as 40A for the compressor starting surge, and a fairly large battery bank capable of delivering something over 2000 watts continuously (losses in the charging and conversion process) as well as the surge. So, if your actual demand is now calculated around 2000 watt/hour, and you need to both run the unit and charge batteries during the daylight hours - and considering that the ideal charging rate for a lead-acid battery is on the order of 0% of its capacity, you will need a huge reserve on the battery section and a huge excess on the solar section to make up for the 5 hours maximum input. So, the average high-quality deep-discharge battery will do about 400Ah @ 2.6V. Which comes to 5040 watts for one hour. For round figures, it will give you 2000 watts for 2.5 hours. You will need a minimum of eight of them just to make your system run for the 9 hours you are anticipating. Given that you do not want to run the batteries to zero each night, a 50% reserve would be a wise investment - comes to now twelve (2) batteries. Now, you will have to make 2000 watts (to run the unit) and also produce and another 8600 (per hour for five hours) watts to charge the batteries for the next night. Again, for round figures, you will need 0,000 watts of solar power, or seventy (70) panels. At ~0 watts/s.f. (00 watts/meter), that comes to about 000 square feet or 00 square meters. Modern non-crystaline panels may reduce this by 20%, or so but no more than that. You will be charging the batteries at roughly 20% of their discharge capacity - which will pretty much cut their service live in half, or so. As the average deep-discharge battery has about an 8-year life span under ideal conditions (and your situation will be far from ideal) you may expect to replace them every four years or so with good care. Much less with no care.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a government building?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a government building. In fact, many government buildings have already implemented solar energy systems to reduce their carbon footprint and lower energy costs.
- Q: If you were to be asked to write a material(s) report on either -solar panelsor -aircraft fuselageWhich would you choose?well i was asked to choose between these two,so i guess that if i choose what the majority wouldn't, i might just score a little bit higher, what do you think?if you are the lecturer you would want something different right?
- Solar Panels. Solar panels is a generic term for any semiconductor that converts solar energy to electrical energy. However there many different kinds of solar panels and constructed in different ways from different materials. There is the generic polysilicon solar panels for residential installation on one end of the spectrum. On the other end are very high efficiency (and expensive) solar cells used on the Mars Orbiter that are constructed of so called triple junction GaAs/Ge solar cells. In addition there are also the thin film solar cells that are being researched that use Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) to form junctions and make very efficient cells on very thin substrates. I would say that research into materials that can be used for solar cells is one of the hottest research fields right now. (That being said, I really did enjoy Airframe by Micheal Crithon. Whenever I'm in a plane during bad weather I always thing of the engineers that designed the plane... what assumptions did they make... what tradeoffs did they make... )
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a recreational vehicle (RV)?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a recreational vehicle (RV). This is a popular option for RV owners who want to generate their own electricity and reduce their reliance on traditional power sources while on the road. Solar panels can be mounted on the roof of an RV and connected to the onboard battery system to provide power for various appliances and devices.
- Q: Has anyone had any experience building their own solar panels for home use? I have seen on the news lately that people are utilizing solar panels to power their hot water heaters to save on their power bill.
- Hey David, yes, we have built plenty of them. If you are into the do it yourself world, the easiest type to build is the Batch Preheater type. What you need is an old water heater, something small, like an under counter model, 0 to 30 gallons in size. It has to be one that hasn't rusted out yet and started leaking. We stopped at a local plumbing place in town, they are always throwing out units they have removed from homes because the new owner wants a larger unit, or gas versus electric, and so on. He sold us a pretty recent model for $0. Take the water heater home, and strip off the outer metal housing and all the insualtion so all you have left is the tank. Clean it up, and paint it with black paint. Now build a wood enclosure, something the size of a dog house that your tank will fit inside of. Use a glass panel for one side of the roof. What works best is an old window pane someone is throwing out that is about the right size, then build your dog house to fit it. When it's done, put some styrofoam insulation panels around the back and side walls to keep the heat in when the sun shines on it, then mount your tank inside. Put your dog house someplace in the sun, run the cold water that normally feeds into your water heater into the tank (in the cold inlet side), then run a pipe from the outlet of the tank to your regular water heater. We have one just like this installed in the northern midwest, it works great about 7 months of the year. Usually in the summer if it's about 75 degrees outside, the water comes into the house at around 00 degrees, then the regular water heater only needs to add another 25 degrees to the water to finish it off. Since the water starts out at about 56 degrees, the solar preheater ends up doing about 65% of the work. In the winter, we simply drain the tank and lines to and from it, and route the cold water directly to the regular water heater. There are some designs on line, try googling, Batch Water Preheater. Take care, Rudydoo
- Q: How do solar panels affect the overall carbon footprint of a building?
- Solar panels can significantly reduce the overall carbon footprint of a building. By harnessing clean and renewable energy from the sun, solar panels generate electricity without emitting greenhouse gases. This means that the building relies less on fossil fuel-based electricity, reducing its carbon emissions. Additionally, solar panels can offset the energy consumption of a building, further minimizing its carbon footprint, making it a sustainable and environmentally-friendly choice.
- Q: wondering if i should get them?? not sure if its worth leasing? also anyone know anything about solar city?
- It okorder He has a modest system, and soon will be uploading some useful informaiton on cosntructing smaller solar arrays from individual small cells salvaged from various items. At some point too he will cover converting some items people would not really think of to running on 2 volts that once were 20 VAC items. I know the author.. so I get previews. If you post a question in his comments on some aspect or detail or if something is not real clear, he will try to address them too.
- Q: I don't want to spend a fortune, maybe talking like over $200 but I would like to power my computer, the monitor, my tv, and a small fridge.I looked up the price on some but it does not make any sense to me because it says that it has reached the price of less than $ per watt but if I look up a 20 watt solar panel it is $560 dollars. Why would it not be $20 because they said $ a watt.Where would be the best place to buy the cheapest solar panels?
- Today the lowest cost is more like $3 a watt. And you need to shop well to get it that cheap. The solar industry hopes to drive the cost down to $ a watt with the new thin film technology, but production volumes are still too low with that new technology for the market prices to come down. Their goal is to hit $ a watt within 5 years.
- Q: Well my dad has been into Solar panels for quite a while, his birthday is coming up and i want to get him a small minature one, so he can toy around with it and be able to use it as expirience for when he gets a bigger one. my dad has been doing ALOT of studying, and i've been looking online but idk what kinda kits to get so should i get a 0w kit, 5w kit, or 20w kit? which one would be best to fool around with and play with? thanks
- Go with the 20W kit. Possibly he can get this going and light up a 5 watt bulb? Does he have an inverter? Sounds like fun! I may look into this later. I did notice that our interstate uses these small ones along the way for something. I have something more interesting; plans for a window solar panel box made out of most scrap items lying around. Just moved so have to unpack and find those plans! Anyway, have fun and hope your dad likes his kit.
- Q: Okay, so I have a science fair coming up soon and I need help with my project. SO - What should I use to demonstrate with the propeller? A toy boat? Plane? And I only have mini solar panels ; so how do I put the solar panels on the toy boat/plane to make the propeller move off of the sun's energy? Thanks. Steps please!
- Solar panels produce electricity. To move the propeller you need mechanical motion. An Electric motor converts from electrical to mechanical power. Most Solar Panels produce DC electricity as do batteries so you need a DC motor that is sized to match the Output of your solar panels. For small temporary projects like this I find that hot melt glue is great to assemble parts. Using a voltage meter you can expose your solar panels to a strong light (or one equal to what you expect during your demonstration) and measure the voltage across the terminals. This may help to size the motor. It depends upon the size of your propeller and how it is made. Your three choices are to use it to power an airplane, to power a boat underwater or to power a boat like an air boat. You might also use the air boat concept to make a car. (air car) The air boat might be the simplest to make but you will need a body of water to demonstrate the concept. The air car doesn't have such a requirement.
