- Q: how do prisms bend light? specifically how do thick prisms bend light compared to thin prisms.
- Hey Marie.....light travels in wavelegnths much like the waves of an ocean travelling to the shore. When something interrupts or alters the course of these wavelegnths (such as light travelling through a prism) then these wavelengths (ripples) must do a detour and this is called refraction (not to be confused with reflection). It is the same reason that we sometimes see a rainbow in different mediums. Each waverlegnth of light actually has a corresponding color to it.....hence the rainbow. A Frenchman named Fresnel figured out some fancy mathematical equations to explain all of this and when you see an old lighthouse up close you will see the fresnel lens that it supports. It uses this theory so as to take a small light source indide if it (such as an old whale oil lamp) and then magnify and refract the light into a seemingly brighter appearance. Light can bend (refract) and when it does this then corresponding colors appear due to a change in wavelegnth (it makes a detour) and the intensity of the light may appear greater or smaller.

- Q: What are some good lights or lighting bulbs I can use for indoor video work?Currently, I use a Sony Handycam CX 110 for video work.
- video okorder / I know some people who have used flood lamps at the hardwood store; however those lights always seemed textured to me and provide a poor quality of llight. The reflective dimples show up in the video. Sometimes it can make the skin look scaley. I don't recommend the flood lights.

- A regular forescent light bulb will work fine. Last winter I bought a 4 ft long hanging shop light for $9 at Home Depot. Started all my garden seedlings under the light and they grew very well. The hanging shop light has a chain on each end at the top, so you can hang it under a cabinet or shelf by screwing small hooks (cup hooks) into the bottom of the cabinet or shelf, and hooking the chains onto them. . You can raise the light as your plants go by raising the 2 chains, When the seedlings are big enough to go outside, you just unhook the chains, take the light down, remove the small hooks from the underside of your cabinet and store the light in the basement or attic or wherever until next year.,

- Light particles or photons are generally considered to be point sources of energy, not matter. Any matter has mass. The only time photons have mass is when they're at rest, but under natural conditions they're never at rest.
