My wife had slight anemia with our first and was put on iron tablets, she had the same issues- felt sick all of the time, constant cramps so she stopped taking them and instead took an iron supplement called spatone, same amount of iron without any nasty side effects. She's taken them during all pregnancies, now on #3 and not been anemic since. Also make sure your diet consists of a lot of iron- green leafy vegetables, red meat (if you eat it), iron fortified cereals etc.
