- the way the wheel spins freely doesn't really mean anything. if you have bearing spacers(the little tube that goes between the bearings), twist the nut down really tight, then loosen it half a turn. if you don't have bearing spacers, get some. but for now you can just tighten the nut down to right where it's touching the wheel, but the wheel can't move side to side.

- The big wheels make it easier to move the wheels over the grass and/or bumps in the lawn. Think how hard it would be if the wheels were only one inch is size. They would be hanging up so bad you couldn't move. Now make them the size of car or bike wheels. Easy to move, right. Nuff said. Also, the mower will pull itself forward so big or small makes no difference. However, to back up you will press down on the handle then pull it backwards thus using those big wheels.

- Visually check the tread wear on the tires and if it's looks more worn on one side then it's usually an alignment or balance issue. Assuming it not something obvious like loose lug nuts the cause of the imbalance could be the struts, bent rim, or possibly unevenly worn brake pads.
