- Here's a rough guide: Steam: Iron and steel for the frames and superstructure. Wrought iron or steel plate for the frames, and high-grade steel for the boiler. Copper and brass for the pipes, fittings, etc. Diesel, electric: Steel for the frames and bogies, pressed steel or possibly aluminium for the outer body shell, fine grade steel for the mechanisms, copper for the electric wiring Railways revolutionised transport and transformed society, making journeys over long distances much shorter and opening up markets for goods in ways that could never have been possible in the age of horse transport. Locomotives were the engines that powered this transformation. Pollution. Steam locomotives generate smoke and combustion gases, and in the early years of railways many people protested against this. Similarly, a diesel train generates exhaust fumes. However with the advent of road transport many people have realised that trains, forwarding a given number of passengers or load of goods, generate less pollution than road transport. Effect on the landscape. Once the railway had been established, the landscape would never be the same again. Massive earthworks, tunnels and bridges transformed the look of the countryside and towns and cities alike. Coal mines and foundries sprang up everywhere to feed the insatiable appetite of the railways for fuel and materials. That's why it was called, 'The Industrial Revolution'.

- Other than gluing , smaller sections of pipe can be fused (melted)together. Fusing is a common technique in industrial and civil applications and for joining types of plastic pipe for which there isn't a solvent based glue available. HDPE (High density Poly Ethelyene) is an example of a thermo plastic, one which is joined by heat and not a solvent based glue. PCV (Poly Vynil Chloride) pipe like what you would find at home depot uses a solvent based glue. The solvent based glue chemically softens and joins the pipe sections together without the use of heat. The attached link shows a mile long section being fused together as its being pulled into an old pipe. Fused joints do not require addtional pipe fittings like couplings. Couplings used in glued PVC joints are larger diameter than the pipe and would not be able to be pulled through an old pipe section with a significant loss of inside pipe diameter. Fused joints are nearly the same outside diameter of the pipe and do not require a coupling fitting. As a result the fused pipe can be pulled into an old section of pipe and use nearly the entire inside dimension of the old pipe. The process of placing a new pipe inside and old pipe is called slip lining. It is a means to rejuvinate and old leaky pipe without he need to dig up all of the the old pipe.

- Q: Why do dogs pee on anything upright? Tree, fire hydrant etc?
- Cut the pipe that is leaking about 6 either way from the leak. use a pipe cutter so you will have a nice clean cut. You will be replacing about 1 foot of pipe. Get the proper size pipe and two collars. Mark the pipe one half the distance of the collar so the collar will be centered. Install the new pipe and collars and solder them back together. When you heat the pipe to solder the new one in heat the pipe and not the collar. When the pipe and collar are hot enough it will accept the solder. If you don't know how to solder you can buy compression fittings and use a wrench. Soldering is not that hard to do.
