Q: I have a 1995 Kenner open fishing boat v bottom center console with 90 hp Suzuki. At the dock where I am keeping the boat they want to keep it suspended out of the water at all times. The boat slip is set up with a hoist that is good up to about 7700 lbs. Thanks to my answer from Seattles I think my dry weight is about 1200 lbs plus 341 for the motor and plus fuel, 2 anchors, etc. What I would like to know is the stress on the d-rings - 2 in the back and the one up front (not a lifting ring on the bow) I use this ring when I winch the boat out of the water on to the trailer.At one of the marina's they used these same 3 rings for lifting my boat out in and out of the water from dry storage but never continuous weight hanging.Will these rings hold this or should I have reinforcement plates and larger rings?Thanks,Josey: Those are used for tying the boat to the side of the pier,or winching it on to a trailer.They are not designed to hold the entire weight of the boat.It would be better to either trailer it or put slings under the hull with a chain hoist or hydraulic lift mechanism.

Q: I am currently designing an integration on hoist with inverters and I need encoders to detect the position.I am using a Linear encoder with 5V output, and the input terminals to the inverter can support 5-24VDC. Should I need to use the line driver to boost the signal from the encoder? Personally, I don't think it is necessary but my boss asked me to include it. I am confused now: You say that your inverter can support 5 to 24, and you have a linear encoder with 5V output. Though it is just about adequate, it is much better if you have a signal of higher value such as even 7 or 8, as in that case you will be much above the minimum. This is something like standing too close to a swimming pool, and one step will take you into the pool. better you stand away, unless of course you want a dip. Then the question of failures. What is the cost of failure of hoist? Is it fine if the detection is not right at times? These are reasons for keeping the signal well into the gap of 5 to 24, and not operate at edge, of 5V.

Q: i was wondering the average price to rent an engine hoist for one day: Wranglers from the 1990's were common inline 4 or 6 cylinders 4.0 L. I would say any inline 4 or 6 cyl 4.0 L from the 90's would fit but im not 100 percent. How used is the engine for 3700, mileage, year, taken care of? What did they mean by core motor? are they rebuilding it so it would be an entirely new motor? If so then I would spend the extra 500 for a new motor with that warrenty. You just got to make sure they do everything correct, and have them physically write the warrenty down so you have it incase they wont fix it. The price sounds like a fair price, shoping around when the car doesn't drive, is difficult so i think you would be the best by just using there shop unless another shops quote is significantally lower.

I would go with safety first anyways. some consumers can be tricky and squirmy. The second person is there to guide, look for issues, and comfort the individual so they are not scared through the transition.

AC motors for such application comes from much larger number of suppliers. They come with integral brake, and perhaps with integral reduction gear also. Electrical control gear (for convenient hoist and lower ) for such AC motors are also very simple in construction in the absence of associated static converters. I have hardly seen industrial use of DC motors for hoist/crane duty applications in the range of your choice. I have come across DC motors for hoist/cranes duty application of much larger size, constructed in split frame, and during the period when AC variable speed motors were not so varsetile. Nevertheless less,(1) You may enquire BALDOR (member of ABB group) motor manufacturer for their POWER MOTORS (DC motors).. They seem to have DC motors for Crane duty application at about 1.5 HP. (2) Perhaps you may also inquire GE ENERGY (Industrial Solution ) for their KINEMATIC industrial motors ( starting from 1/4 HP to 3500 HP) which they appear to recommend in their catalogs, for crane duty applications. Addition after 18 hrs KINEMATIC motors appears to be for DC supply.
