The size of the inverter depends entirely on what you are going to power with it, not the size of the panel array. As long as you are not powering anything that is over the 300W rating, you don't need a new one. Just be sure to check the details of the inverter, is it 300W continuous, or can it handle up to a 300W surge? Also, it's a modified sine wave inverter instead of a pure sine wave inverter, so don't plug any sensitive electronics into it. They may not work, or you may get a buzz or hum from it.

- Sh*t is expensive. I live in FL.....to solar a 500 sq foot house here ...even with the gov rebates and the discounts..etc..etc.. sts the home owner @ $24,000 dollars. They say you will recoup your $$$ in 0 years. 0 YEARS??? The gov should get behind this and make it cheaper...but that will not happen.

- First, you need to make sure that your battery can take a regular 34Ah discharge without damage. The usual wisdom when using deep cycle lead-acid batteries is to allow for no greater than 50% discharge. This is to prevent the battery from ageing prematurely. Note that automotive batteries are not usually considered suitable for deep-cycle applications. Best allow for at least 200Ah capacity. Your solar panel capacity needs to take into account that whatever the nameplate output of the panel, that will be what it will produce under ideal conditions, actual output will always be less, often quite a bit less. You also need to allow capacity to cope with dull, overcast days when the light level is very low. You can get solar maps that will give you the sunshine hours and irradiation levels at your location. The solar panel capacity ends up being a juggling act between available funds/space and how critical it is that the light always works as desired. Let's say you had a 400W panel, which sounds quite generous. In the middle of winter, it may produce only 75W for 5 hours on a dull day, not quite enough to run the light for 0 hours. Would you expect several such days in a row? How many days could a 00Ah of battery capacity cover under these conditions?

- Unfortunately Eileen the panels are bound to fade as its par for the course. Over time much like everything else (from an AC condenser to your knees and hips) everything starts to go south. When did you purchase and install your panels? If this was done within the past few years then something is definitely wrong, and you should have the manufacturer and installer come back and replace the panels....on their dime of course. Is the warranty on your panels still in effect? If so then its definitely something that they have to come back and take care of. There is a company I know of called Sun Electronics that has a 20 year warranty on their products, so if its worth anything you might want to buy your new panels/system from them. The panels around today are more efficient than those of years past, and with the cost coming down due to economies of scale and the tax incentives you might want to consider getting a new system. - You will need help with this. Panels may or may not be 24 volt. If you can find a name tag, you can find out from the manufacturer's web site. Some folks hook them all in parallel. Mine are in series, to create 480 volts. the reason for going to higher voltage is to reduce power loss in the wiring. Even then, I used a wire size larger than recommended. The frames want to be interconnected, and wired to ground. The live conductors connect through disconnect switches to an inverter. The inverter is sized to the output of the panels. Where the utility allows net metering, the inverters are connected through a disconnect switch to the grid, which of course also feeds the house. Assuming you are on the grid, you will not need batteries. If outages severely impact you, you can have batteries. Counting against them is that they are costly, and use part of the power you generate, just to keep them charged. If you have batteries, it is usually best to rewire circuits so noncritical circuits are disconnected during outages. Leaving perhaps minimal lighting, fridge, freezer and critical medical circuits. Learn all you can from the Internet (try solar panels), and from the green search box above. Be sure to see if your state has a rebate program, and the conditions which it requires.
