- Your laptop is working as designed. Go into the power management features in control panel and change the settings for what the laptop does when you close the lid. Beware that if you disable the standby or hibernation settings when you close the laptop and you forget and put the laptop into a carrying case while it is running, then you will very likely cook the laptop alive and it will fail.

- Personally i use a backpack because i carry other things in the other pockets along with the laptop. But it is more of a preference thing because some people may like laptop cases or over the shoulder bags better depending on comfortability or conveniance or style. I would not suggest carrying it by itself only because you have a greater risk of the laptop getting knocked out of your hands and getting damaged.
