- For okorder /... Electric power. Rather than an overhead cable you can bury a cable or PVC conduit and power the shed with 20AC. You can easily supply 5 to 30A of 20V AC that supply all of your power needs without the issues and limitations of the Solar system. If your shed is within 200 ft of your home you should be able to power the shed for less than $400 if you do the work.

- The first item is whether the psp charger output is ac or dc. IF, AC then you are stuck as the panels put out DC. (Increasing the voltage enough to cover invertor losses is not practical in this instance!) IF DC, then you need to combine panels to produce 2 Amps, after which it is run through the 3 terminal VOLTAGE regulator to limit the voltage to 5v. That is 8 panels in parallel in 2 groups placed in series = 2amps at 8 volts, then add regulator for 2 amps at 5v. (Parallel increases amps, series increases volts.) Total panels required is 6 panels.

- the panel would have to be on for 0 hours in the sun to get an hours use with the set up. try researching solar hot water heaters. they are much more efficient. a cheap one would be painting an old hot water heater black and pipe it to the new hot water heater. it will save you 80% of your electric hot water bill.

- Quite a while. I am assuming you are using 2 volts as your buss power. The small panels were intended as a float charge for batteries to keep them from discharging over a period of time. 3 Watts means only /4 Amp. Normally when I do slow charging of batteries, I am using right around amp, and that takes about a week to bring up a battery that was discharged past 80 percent capacity. When you factor in losses from corrosion, battery self discharge, and loose connections, you will likely want to add more panels. using your 55Amp/hour battery, a amp charger running constant in a perfect world would take 55 hours. Real world, probably closer to 64 to 72 hours. That for simplicity is 5 Watts constant charge power. Now you are using /5 of that with your current setup. so 5 times longer, whichh puts you in the 300 hour range of real world, or 220 hours of perfect world. This time of year, you may have about 8 hours worth of charging light, which puts you at close to a month. Don't fret. If you are using it for lighting in a shed, Power LEDs and tethering some of the inexpensive LED lights to the 2 volt source will give you plenty of light for a very long time, the panels will help some, but you will likely need to put the batteries on a charger, or you can build a gas powered 2 volt generator easily enough. Charge it up only when needed.

- having solar panels move like that on a mobile platform is inadvisable -- especially if there is a dynamic wind load resulting from the motion of the mobile platform. Even having a tilt mechanism is dubious at best. think of what limited marginal gain would be gained by mounting a small solar panel on the moon roof of a car. (ultimately, the best answer is to turn the car so that it's angle to the sun is optimal -- but the road/travel direction constraints are what ultimately prohibit that.) while there are ways to build sliding panels, the weight constraints would interfere with your weight/thrust ratios to the point of futility. if you really need that panel somewhere else, don't slide it out of the way, just buy another panel and mount it there. it's more expensive, but it's actually the cheapest solution in terms of design on a mobile platform.

They focus sunlight with mirrors onto a pipe containing a liquid which is then heated to it's boiling point. That turns a turbine to produce power or is harnessed in some other way. The panels are cheap compared to photo cells, don't require perfect manufacture or exotic materials, no expensive maintenance and they are much easier to repair. I don't know of any available to individuals yet but there are at least two companies building generating plants in Nevada with this technology. SunPower is about 22% efficient but even at that rate it will take decades to pay for itself and the panels are unlikely to last that long at anything near optimal efficiency. The cost is just too high at present but solar thermal may provide a good alternative until photovoltaic cells mature, if you can cobble together a system. The final link is about a claimed 80% efficient solar cell that even generates some power at night. It's based on nano-technology, like many promising energy developments in batteries, electrolysis and ethanol production. If it works as advertised it should revolutionize solar tech. Eventually.
