- First off, that kid doesn't know what the good metal bands are during this decade. He desperately needs to look up the bands Firewind, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Nevermore, Arsis, and Kataklysm. Those bands have some serious talent!!! Slipknot and Korn are mainstream garbage and aren't my cup of tea. Secondiley, I don't really consider bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Van Halen as metal bands. They have more of an influence on today's modern rock. Therefore, those bands that you listed are considered classic rock in my opinion. The older style metal bands would be bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Obituary, Death, and Slayer. You get the picture. While I do like some of the older metal bands. I am actually more fond of today's crop. I mean, today you have a good selection of Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal bands. Those are two great genres of metal. It is just my opinion, but if you are looking for a more diverse taste in metal, then today's metal scene is a better fit for you. Also, let me say that there are many great bands that hail from European countries nowadays. American metal isn't as strong as it was before. Countries such as Finland, Sweden, German, England, and Norway have dominated the globe with its metal music from the past 15 years. That is where the good music is at these days. Oh and let me name off my favorite metal bands to you again, in case you are interested in what I think sounds like good metal these days... - Slipknot is labeled as Nu-Metal simply because it's mainstream and they sound mainstream. It's as simple as that. Nu-Metal is the combination of the grunge revolution and metal along with rap here and there. The main distinguishing factor is that often focus on the mood/texture and rhythm of the music instead of melody, which is common amongst most mainstream music. There's nothing wrong with listening to Nu-Metal, such as Slipknot, Korn, PapaRoach, Disturbed, etc. But most metal fans reject the genre because it doesn't follow the purist heavy metal formula and because most metal fans have taken pride in it being a semi-underground genre. I personally don't like Slipknot (Or most Nu-Metal), but listen to what you want and don't worry about labels.

- Nu Metal is a bullshit genre. None of the bands you mentioned sound remotely alike , yet they are in the same genre. Along with Static X and who know who else. Total utter silliness, its a worthless genre. People say Nu Metal sucks, and I don't get that. It is too broad . Some of the bands are crap, some are really good.

- I agree with almost everything you said except that I prefer American metal because I'm more into thrash (Testament, Metallica, etc.) and stuff like Ozzy and Black Label Society. BUT I also like European metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Celtic Frost rule.

- Blackfoot always had a good hard metal edge to them. Pantera, of course. Derek Miller is a newcomer with a hard southern sound, even though he's Canadian. I was hard pressed to believe he didn't grow up in sweaty bars across the Bible Belt.
