A phone with a contract: Its a lot cheaper but you will have to activate the phone through the seller, which means for you putting up a deposit. What I would do is go to a T-Mobile store and tell them that you are getting a T-Mobile free from your dad and what your options are. Don't let them talk you into signing anything right there and then. Go back home and think about your options and then make a decision.

I would rather just buy the phone. Not having a contract makes you monthly bills a little lower for like 20 less. It does have AIM so don't worry and yes you can just insert the Sim card to you new phone with the same number.
