- Q: Hello Yahoo, I am doing another one of my wacky inventions however I need something that will give me 2V of power!I don't want to connect loads of AA batteries into a battery holder as this shall run out quickly and become expensive in the long run, I don't want to carry around a big car battery either.I have been searching around on OKorder .uk and found some Solar-Powered 2V Trickle Chargers. These say they shall work on cloudy days (which is perfect as the majority of the time that is all we get!) but could I use it as an independent power source? If I attached the thing I want to run to the solar panel will it supply it with 2V of power?
- How many amps will you need? Remember v x a = power. The way those trickle chargers work is by sacrificing some amperage to get up to 2 volts. If you can invent closer to ~3V range that solar cells naturally produce thing will likely work better. A sign or a light that doesn't need a lot of power will work. Automobile battery packs might take a month to charge. Solar-Powered 2V Trickle Chargers are used mostly to keep things like boat batteries in storage from discharging, not to charge them.
- Q: I have a 500 watt inverter and battery but need solar panels to run my need. I want to have enough juice to run a computer and monitor and sometimes a 5w amp. I am not sure how much power is needed to run the computer (standard desktop with 5flat screen with an additional surround sound system) though on the side of the computer it says 5 amp but I know I used to run it and monitor and surround sound with a heating blanket on the same circuit which was rated at 20 amps. My question is that I would like to go and buy some panels (cheaply as I'm unemployed) from somewhere like Harbor Freight that would meet the need of the converter to supply enough amperage. So what size panel(s) or panels would I need to run this setup? If I am correct I think 500 watts is equal to 5 amps. Would this even work? Could I run a partial system where I could run some of the stuff to take a load off? I need to lower my electric bill somehow. Thanks!
- Solar okorder in their survival discussion in the archive, this exact project was discussed at length.
- Q: Can solar panels be used in apartments or condominiums?
- Yes, solar panels can be used in apartments or condominiums. However, the feasibility of installation and usage may vary depending on the specific circumstances of the building, such as roof space, orientation, and ownership structure. Some apartments and condominiums have successfully implemented shared solar systems or community solar programs to enable residents to benefit from solar energy.
- Q: I'm doing a science fair experiment with a tiny two-inch solar panel that only gives off like .5 volts of energy, but I need to know how many volts an average sized solar panel (like one you'd get to run your house) would produce. And how many panels do people usually get?
- You should read up on the different electrical units. You say .5 volts of energy, but this makes little sense. Energy is measured in Joules. Power in Watts. Solar panels will produce different voltages and currents, depending on the amount and angle of sunlight hitting them. Power = volts * amps. Before installing solar panels a home owner should do an energy audit to find out how much power they currently use - and how much that could be reduced with some easy changes. Solar panels are expensive, so it makes sense to reduce the amount that you need to install. In some places you can sell extra power back to your utility - so having extra panels might give you some small amount of money back - but this is rarely enough to justify the cost of the extra panels. I put 28 panels on my house (see picture in source URL). My utility has tiered pricing for electricity (first few kWh each month are cheap, but price for extra ones goes up in stages). My panels keep me from having to pay the higher rates.
- Q: Solar Panels not working very well, they have faded. Is there any paint or anything else I can do to restore them? Thanks Eileen
- Unfortunately Eileen the panels are bound to fade as its par for the course. Over time much like everything else (from an AC condenser to your knees and hips) everything starts to go south. When did you purchase and install your panels? If this was done within the past few years then something is definitely wrong, and you should have the manufacturer and installer come back and replace the panels....on their dime of course. Is the warranty on your panels still in effect? If so then its definitely something that they have to come back and take care of. There is a company I know of called Sun Electronics that has a 20 year warranty on their products, so if its worth anything you might want to buy your new panels/system from them. The panels around today are more efficient than those of years past, and with the cost coming down due to economies of scale and the tax incentives you might want to consider getting a new system. Sorry to let you down though Eileen!
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power streetlights or outdoor lighting?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power streetlights or outdoor lighting. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be stored in batteries and used to power streetlights or outdoor lighting fixtures during nighttime. This helps to reduce reliance on traditional grid-based electricity and promotes more sustainable and environmentally friendly lighting solutions.
- Q: Can solar panels work in cloudy weather?
- Yes, solar panels can still work in cloudy weather, although their energy production may be reduced. Cloud cover reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the panels, resulting in a lower output. However, modern solar panels are designed to generate electricity even in low-light conditions, making them still effective in producing energy during cloudy days.
- Q: want to add solar panels to manufactured home, and we get a lot of snow up here in the NW. Wondering if it would interfer with the roof load.
- The okorder if you would like some ideas on how to do this.

- Q: I've heard that solar panels have back-up batteries for when it is cloudy or rainy that day.. is this true?
