- Sorry, no all hard drive are made the same. There are several types of hard disk drive, basically 3 types, IDE, SATA and SCSI. The 2 former types are more common. SCSI drives are seldom used in laptops. IDE drives are mostly in older laptop made about 3 years ago, the SATA drives are more recent drives. The different between them are the ways data are stored and retrieve. SATA drive can transfer much more data and for larger capacity drive. To buy the correct type, one should refer to the manual. Even SATA drives have 2 types, SATA1 and SATA2. Google the web could get some information. Physically, SATA drive's connector is much smaller and shorter than IDE drive.
