- Q:I've been looking into solar panels. They are fairly expensive ($35k or so). My state has some rebates and grants available. Is anyone aware of any federal grants and rebates other than the federal tax credit? We are subject to AMT tax and can't take the credit. (Which is ridiculous, is the federal government committed to conservation or aren't they??????)
- I have some panels on my house and no they are not cheap. If you look around you can buy them for around $4.70 per watt for a 00 plus watt panel, this will make them $470 or more. But you will get a first quality panel. And no I do not know of any fed. government programs for home owners. These kind of programs usually only go to large companies. And it does not look like our government is going to help seeing how the let the large oil companies keep there tax programs but refused to help solar. This just happened today when the senate voted on the energy plane. Good luck go solar

- The technology of the solar panels is way beyond any DIY project. You can buy pre-assembled panels and install them, but you also need the devices to make the DC they generate into the AC your home needs. Also you will need the batteries for the nights and the times when the sun does not shine. Solar/ photo voltaic generation does work but is not a cost effective way to reduce your reliance on the electrical grid as of this time. They cost 2 arms and a leg, and take many years to come close to break even on the electrical savings. Do a search on the amount of power each panel will generate and then compute how much power you need and what the costs are. I believe in solar power, but not for an individual residence is it practical. Good luck.

- Q:I have a home made 24 volt electric cart. It is powered by two 2Volt deep cycle batteries. Since the motor runs on 24 volts the batteries are wired in series to produce the 24 volts. I only have a 2 volt battery charger, but I also have two 2 volt solar panels. It is a pain having to unhook wires, rewire it, or charge them one at the time.HERE IS THE QUESTION REALLY... Can I wire the two 2 volt solar panels together in series (ie: negative to positive) then connect it to the existing 24 volt system and have it charge the batteries fine. I know basic wiring, but I know nearly nothing about solar panels, will it work fine? will it cause them to break? or short out?(additional info, the solar panels are only rated at 5 amps so it will not overcharge the batteries or anything)
- Although I'm not experienced with solar panels, I would say no. if you wire them in series you'll actually be putting voltage through one of the panels. Can't believe this would be good. My suggestion would be to wire one panel to one battery and one panel to the other battery. I really don't believe there's a need to disconnect the batteries from each other. However if you would disconnect the one wire between the two batteries you would be guaranteed safe and I know that would work.
