Q: I'm from Toledo, OH about 2 miles from the MI line. We are a foster family and have adopted 5 children. We just moved into a 5400+sq 2 story home. We have (3) 2.5-3 ton AC units to cool this huge house. We got the house cheap...$75k couldn't pass it up! Anyway...I was wondering how many solar panels it would take and of what wattage to power these Central Air Units and maybe the rest of the house. We have 3 people in our home......9 of which are children who leave the lights on and run hot water to beat the band. We have all brand new energy star appliances and front loader washer and dryer. Gas Range and Gas hot water tank. Was thinking of using metal window frames and buying solar cells and making my own panels. Just don't know how much to buy. We face south with no trees. Constant Sun. thanks for your help. An e-mail address to bounce questions off of would be helpful if you experienced. tx.: I'm inferring that your goal is to save money. You're on the right track with your energy star appliances - saving energy is far better than installing solar panels to cover energy that will be wasted. You may have an opportunity with solar hot water - you would need a large storage tank with 3 people, but that would be the best use of your roof in my opinion. Check with a professional installer, it may make financial sense. Although you could make your own heating panels, it's hard to make a solution as durable as commercial panels. And if freezing is an issue in your area, you would have to drain a homemade system in the winter. With an evacuated tube commercial system, you could keep running right through the winter. In the summer, instead of running those expensive air conditioners, could you just have a cool room in the basement? Anyone who wanted privacy could still go to their regular room and run fans. We have no A/C in our house, and manage, even on those 00+ days. Sounds like awnings or other window coverings might be a big help for you, at least until you can get some deciduous trees in to shade the house in summer. I would advise against making your own solar electric panels. They would not save money over the long term. And check panel prices - they have dropped 50% this year, according to a recent Newsweek article.

Q: Why can't they put solar-panels on the blades and sides of the 300-500 foot tall turbines? Wouldn't this increase effeciency? Therefore, boosting pay-back time, profits, energy-output?: Good to know someone is thinking and coming up with original ideas, so thanks for contributing... Put a large powerful solar collector on the end of the turbine too i.e. facing the sky! Far as I know, solar works on day-light (doesn't have to face the sun). So your idea is not to be put down. Metal blade turbines - are heavy - wooden windmills - heavy... so some added weight to the wind-turbine's paddles would be OK robably. Great if solar device not made of glass (so unbreakable). I think panels on the roof are old hat...

What I have found are solar panels for under $00 each, inverters, rechargeable indoor lights and a few camping/RV products that are interesting. I can't afford to go cold turkey and cover my roof with solar panels and I don't think the HOA would allow me to even if I could. Q: What's your opinion on solar power? More specifically, having panels installed on your roof to reduce your electric bill. I'm having a consultation tomorrow to get more details. I live in the SW, so it's always crazy sunny here. I don't know what the cost will be yet. Is it something you'd consider if the situation was right? If not, why?: Just had them installed on a development of 4 homes and they look goood! So far each user has free electricity during daytime for 3/4 of the year. If you live in a hot country - that's free A/C to keep you cool. The downside is that it is grid-tied so there is no storage, which means that if you use electricity to cook the evening meal - you don't get that free. What we advise to do instead is to make use of slow cookers that cook meals during the day - for FREE, and just serve it up in the evening as it keeps the heat. It would be more effective if you used storage radiators and heated hot water tanks for washing/bathing using it but this hasn't been added yet. It's free power all day - so what is there to complain about? The only catch I have found is that some power companies charge YOU if you export power to the grid - so just watch out for that, and design your system to avoid this if this applies, but most just don't pay anything - so you may as well use what you get.
