- Q: I know theres red light tanning beds but are there blue light tanning beds?
- I'm a scientist and I can assure you only ultraviolet light (in the B band) will give you a tan. UV light is invisible to our eyes. Any color you see from the lights is just extra light that has no effect. If someone is making tanning beds that look red, they are fooling you into thinking they are safer by not appearing blue. They are just using the red to hide the blue. The invisible UV light MUST still be present to cause a tan and it is just as bad for your skin no matter what other colors are added. The other colors have no effect on the skin, they do not make UV safe. This is pure fakery to make money by selling you a dangerous product. They must have taken lessons from the cigarette companies.

- Light is not made of matter, and is not itself affected by gravity as Newtonian physics would suggest. In Einstein's model, gravity is actually a warp or bend in spacetime. Light travels in straight lines through space, but if space itself is warped then the light will follow the resulting curve. In the case of a black hole the space is so warped that the light ends up doubling back on itself and just cannot escape.

- What type of grow light is it? Grow lights can vary: One type is high intensity fluorescent (which is great for lighting rooms and plants) or either a metal-halide or high pressure sodium light (which you wouldn't want to use to light a room, it would be an ugly orange glow)

- It is misleading but has a grain of truth. It's a bit like saying 'ice is really steam'. It kind of misses the point. Ice and steam behave very differently even though they are made of the same types of atom. Electromagnetic radiation is one form of energy. And light is just one type of electromagnetic radiation. Matter is another form of energy (energy hugely compressed into a small space). Light has many properties which matter does not, and vice versa. Maybe the video will help.

- Black lights are a form of UV radiation, so prolonged exposure to a black light could do some damage to your skin, and possibly give you skin cancer. But the black lights are so low intensity that you would have to have a very prolonged exposure.
