- Q: I am learning about container gardening. I am growing herbs and veggies in my house. There is not enough light for some of the plants. My question is; is there a significant difference between a grow light and a regular fluorescent? What really is best for my plants?
- Nope. Any of the big box stores will have a full-spectrum fluorescent bulb, and that will do just fine. It's much cheaper, too, and can be placed in a standard light socket. If you can't find that, look for the fluorescent bulbs with color temperatures about 4,000 K (rather blue). The last choice would be a standard fluorescent with a color temperature around 2,700 K (the color of an incandescent bulb or a bit too red for most plants). A good grow light would probably be best, but it's certainly not necessary. The full-spectrum light will output enough for your plants in the regions of the spectrum that they like.
- Q: if there is more light, does it mean the area is hotter?
- that would depend on what type of light
- Q: I have a indoor palm that needs more light than it's currently getting. I just bought a tube grow light for plants from wal mart. My palm needs medium light, so how long should i leave the light on it? and how close or far away should the light be?
- If artificial light is the main or only source of light for plants, the lamps should be lit 12 to 14 hours per day and be 6 to 12 inches from plants. Blooming plants will require up to 16 hours and should be no more than 4-6 inches away from lights. It is important that some indoor plants have a regular light/dark schedule. I hope this is what you were looking for.
- Q: Explain how your eyes detect light and images.
- Our eyes detect light by using light sensitive components called rods and cones. Cones are used when the light is intense, such as during the daytime. With cones, we can see different colors of light. Rods are used when the light is very dim. Rods cannot detect colors. That is why things appear as shades of grey at night.

- They don't NEED it, but it helps them relax more in the environment, more natural. Just turn the light on when you wake up, turn it off when you go to bed. About 12 hours of each, just like it would be if they weren't in a tank

- My black light experience is with the tube type light in a florescent light fixture. I used it to capture the the way cotton fibers respond in paper which I had done art work on. My lab in a textile company had larger tube type lights to check chemical additives in fabric. So, try the tube lights which you may be able to find in a Spencer Gifts store.

- Bulbs working on tail lights means absolutely nothing when you're dealing with brake lights. Tail lights, brake lights either have different, separate bulbs or they share the same bulb but use two filaments. Check your brake switch, and if that's not the problem, recheck your bulbs. BTW, you need brake lights in the daytime also.
- Q: Can photosynthesis, in plants, occur with artificial light? If so, can you use LED light?
- Yes they will and yes you can use LEDs. BUT.... different plants have different lighting requirements. They sell several different types of LEDs for plants, but for plants that would grow outside in full sun most growers would consider them inferior to more intense lighting, but they seem to offer good light output for wattage used and they can be had with different spectrum's designed to be more efficient than others. One brand that is popular is the 90watt. UFO design. They also have a 300 watt type. Depending on what your growing you might want to add supplemental lighting of a different type too.
