- Q: I am working on a device to be powered at a remote village in Africa where power is scarce and the power grid shuts on and off all the time everyday. The device works fine but now I need to consider how to power it. My device doesn't consume a lot of power. It is a microcontroller that operates at 5V and maybe draw around 1A of current. We are going to install a solar array with a battery bank for backup power for the village. If I want to go simple, I can just plug in an ac adapter to the wall, but I don't want to consume any of the precious solar power if a 220V-5V ac/dc power adapter is not efficient. The adapter gets very hot and I believe it is consuming a lot of unnecessary power. Or I can use my 20W/16.5V/1.2A penal with a battery, which should be more than enough to power my device day and night. I have done a lot of googling but I still can't find a proper way to charge a battery with a 20W panel.Any input regarding the best way to supply power to the device will be greatly appreciated!

- Did you actually charge the power bank before you used it? How long did this drop of 1/2 the available charge take? No cell phone should use up 6k mAh in less than 2 days unless you are playing games the whole time. The ports are marked for 1 amp and 2 amp power draw. The original USB spec is 5 volts DC at 1 amp draw, and many devices are limited to that spec as the lowest common denominator. Some newer devices can use the USB 2 spec when charging, which is 5 volts with a maximum of 2 amp draw. Basically it will allow a device that supports it to charge twice as fast as the USB 1 port.
- Q: I live in the central U.S and as you can imagine we get tornado's and most of the time they are not that awful like you see in the movies. I amy also not be paying my mortgage and the bank may end up owning it. They may try to sell it without hooking it up to power because they don't care to even find out the condition of any appliance. Most listings like this will allow you to go thru a certain procedure and pay out of your pocket to hook it up for the inspection and then disconnect it afterwords if you don't buy it. Ask the listing agent or ask your buyer agent.
