- Q: I'm building a solar panel for the first time and have the tabbed solar cells. I put together 4 strings of 9 cells. And the cells are each 0.55V, 3.6A.Because I'm going to be using the panel indoors and leaning it up against a window pane, I put them in a 24x36 inch poster-size frame. The frame has a plexiglass cover and a thick cardboard backing. My question to you is this. Will the cardboard backing up against the metal underside (positive side) of the solar cells be ok? I don't know if it may catch fire or if holes may burn through when there's full sun.My guess here is it should be ok. But maybe I'm wrong. If I am wrong, or if something should be put in between, please let me know what I should use.Thanks everyone!
- In commercial panels some sort of polymer is often used for backing. With a 2V panel there are 36 cells, which means they can still output about 4V for charging a 2V battery even when hot. The voltage reduces about 2.2mV per degree C per cell. Commercial panels are meant to work up to about 60 degrees C, which is quite normal in the sun. I have found just lying them on the grass the air circulation is reduced, and they get too hot to charge a 2V battery. This means the backing should have good thermal conductivity while being an electrical insulator, as well as mechanical strength. The cells are often encapsulated in a thermosetting plastic first, then laid face down so a liquid polymer can be poured as backing.. I have removed commercial panels from their frames and re-packaged them to work in a very wet environment. I suppose cardboard would work, but it is unlikely to have good cooling so the expected voltage would be lower. As you intend to only operate indoors I suppose it is unlikely you have full sun most of the time anyway, so there could be less heating and less output current accordingly. I think the cardboard is only useful for a short time, and is not strong enough. Temperature wise it is marginal. The link below uses plywood for the backing. The backing is supposed to provide strength too. A sheet of some sort of plastic or laminate (including melamine laminate as in kitchen bench tops) comes to mind too. The cells are supposed to be bonded to the backing for better thermal conductivity. Use silicon RTV to stick cells to the backing, very thinly.
- Q: I contend:As far as the solar panels causing global warming I'll try to explain. If you put a black panel on the ground or on your house and don't connect it to anything, it will absorb solar energy (heat) during daylight and release it at night (radiation). The net heat gain is zero. If you hook up a solar panel in the same place but hook it up to batteries, charge the batteries during sunlight hours and using that energy to electrically heat the home at night. The panels will absorb solar energy during the day but will convert that to electrical energy in the batteries instead of radiating it back into space at night. The result is a net gain in earth's temperature.Right or wrong?
- Third Law of Thermodynamics (in normal speak): “Not only can you never get ahead, you can’t even break even.” This is a truism that applies to all activities involving energy exchange (and almost everything else as well). Energy in the form of solar radiation falls on the earth. That energy is absorbed by the planet (everything) and heat results. Some portion of that energy is lost in the absorption process and the net released as heat is less than that absorbed from the sun. This is true in all cases. Solar panels, both photovoltaic and heat collectors are subject to the Third Law and they all lose some of the radiant energy striking them in the process of converting that energy into either hot water (or whatever fluid) or electrical energy. Regardless of the process there is always a net loss of energy. The time delay you mention has no bearing on the total heat gain or loss for the planet. In fact the “solar panel effect” reduces the net energy put back into the ecosystem because it introduces another iteration of energy loss through conversion. The Holy Grail of energy conservation it the ability to use, store or recover the entire amount of energy produced regardless of the source of that energy, burning hydrocarbons, geothermal heat exchange, solar radiation, mice on treadmills …..all forms of energy suffer a net loss in any exchange! If we could avoid that loss we could dramatically reduce the heat lost into the atmosphere or ground water and our net energy gain would also be dramatic! Check out the super cooled circuits in use to reduce resistance in sophisticated electronic equipment for a good example of the energy savings. (Of course the savings do not account for energy lost in the cooling process. In any event NO….. solar panels do not contribute to global warming via their operation. (Their manufacture is another story altogether!)

- If that 55-watt panel has an open circuit voltage of 7-8 volts, you may get more efficiency by omitting the charge controller completely, and connecting the panel straight to the battery. 55 watts is marginally too small for a 200 AH battery at 2 volts, by the way.
