There is more to sizing a system than simply selecting panels. I would suggest that you contact a solar installer to do a bid on your system. The quote should be free, and you can always say no. If a house used 40 kWh per day in our area, that would suggest a 6 kW array to offset substantially all the energy usage over the course of a year. Serious panels tend to be in the neighborhood of 200 watts nowadays, and that would mean 30 of those. You could size the system smaller, of course, if you wanted to offset a smaller percentage of your electricity. If there is any way that you can reduce the energy requirments, that will save you more money than putting in big solar. For example, if you can cut that in half by adding insulation and more efficient appliances, you will save more money than if you got a big array to power everything as-is.

wire them in series parallel to get 8 volts at 200 mA, and that should charge a 2 volt battery. You may want to put in a series diode to prevent the battery from discharging into the panel when the sun is out. At 200 mA, depending on the battery size, you may not need much control, as that low a current will not overcharge a large battery, like a small auto battery. In fact it will take a very long time to charge it. edit: But do i need to add a regulator? If by that you mean a voltage regulator, no, as a solar panel has a high output resistance, and that will limit the current into the battery. If you mean a charge controller, if the battery is small, you may need a charge contoller to avoid overcharging the battery. But that is not a voltage regulator. .

sure, but if you don't know what you are doing you could really hurt or kill yourself. Basically you can do whatever you want on your side of the power meter and in the rare occurrence when your solar panels are producing more power that your home is using the meter will run backwards and you will be feeding power to the grid and theoretically reducing your power bill. At the very least you will be using less power from the grid

Bypass diodes would be in parallel with groups of solar cells in a panel. For example, if a module has 72 cells, maybe every 8 cells, there will be a bypass diode. A bypass diode does nothing except salvage some of the energy from the panel if some of the cells are shaded, and others are not. Or, if you have multiple panels in a series string, the bypass diodes allow the other panels in a string to continue to contribute energy when one panel is shaded. Unless you're forced to put the panel(s) where there will be shade during the day, the bypass diode does not matter. Commercial panels all include bypass diodes. Blocking diodes are generally NOT included on commercial panels. If you're going to a grid-tied inverter, you probably don't need one. There are stringent regulations on how panels must be grounded, and whichever side of the panel is grounded should not have a blocking diode. NEC regulations call for a continuous ground to earth. For example, if you have negative ground on your system, the blocking diodes, if any, should go on the positive terminal of the panel. By the way, if you're in the US or Canada, do understand that a home-built panel will not be legal to connect to a grid-tied system. And a grid-tied inverter that plugs into the wall will also be illegal. I'm only saying this because I don't want you to get hurt, or your house to burn down. Line power is nothing to be trifled with.
Q: i just took a trip to florida, they are cutting down anything that doesnt float and putting up buildings. Most of these cost a bundle, bill gates may pay cash for them, but most people will have many payments. Since pools, satellite dishes, and docks if near the water seem to be standard issue, why not a couple solar panels and water heater. It is florida after all, and if you are allready paying a half million or so for a house, what is another 0k gonna mean to you. Why dont they make it mandatory to include these on all new housing and condos and businesses. With that many the price would come down quickly and pay for itself long before the house is payed off and/or florida is flooded due to global warming.
Wow that is a great idea! We have so many old houses around here that no one lives in and they are building houses on 2 /2 acre lots. That seems like a waste of land. There is this construction company that is building town houses with solar panel roofs and the upstairs is the bedrooms and the down stairs is the living area so that it takes a very small lot. 40 x 60 even has room for a car port and small backyard. My friend has one and he made it low cost so everyone has a chance at home ownership. They are being build where he is buying the land and tearing down old houses and puting up these town houses. Makes the town look better and cleans up otherwise bad looking neighborhoods. If they can do that here why not all over? By building up she was telling us it cost less for foundation and roofing which is the most expensive. It is 900' sq ft. 2 bdrm bath. Let's go back to the time when people didn't have to have these 6000 sq.ft houses with 5 acre lots.
