- We are in the UK, but we now have two systems, one which heats the water and the other generates electricity via PV panels. You need to have a roof area facing in the correct direction and at a suitable pitch. If the sun is hitting the roof at an oblique angle the loss of benefit is high. The system that heats the water has the fastest pay back time. Our water has been hot since we had the system installed despite a poor summer here. Over here we can export surplus electricity created by the PV panels back to the national grid, and they buy that surplus. We often have surpluses during the day, but obviously when it is dark and we use electricity, we sort of buy it back. In the 6 months since it was installed, we have generated about 85% of our needs. Our best day was when we generated 46% of our needs. As you may know, we have had rain and floods over here, but to-day we still generated 22% of our needs and we put on several loads of washing. we have kept a spreadsheet of all teh figures. We are very pleased with ours, and we got a grant, but it was very expensive for the PV system. i'd recommend it, though. i have grandchildren and I feel we have to do something to preserve resources for them and to help combat climate problems. Make sure you have done other things - such as made sure your insulation etc is as good as it can be.

- Either you, or someone else, asked this same question yesterday, and the answers given were that it is not possible for us to answer it. The costs depend on where your home is located, what prevailing local labor rates are, how difficult it is to get the equipment to the site, etc, etc. I think one of the answers was that for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house the cost for all the necessary equipment listed would be in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I think that was an underestimate, and that it could be 40 to 50 THOUSAND!!!!! The answerer also pointed out that due to the exorbitantly high costs of the technical equipment that at this time the equipment will wear out BEFORE IT EVER CAN PAY FOR ITSELF IN SAVINGS for on the grid electricity. I agree with that. You need to discuss your wants with 3 or 4, even 5 or 6 LOCAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS to get a reasonably accurate estimate of the costs!!!!!!
- Q:I was having a discussion with a friends about solar panels.He says that if there is a solar panel (sp) on the ground and a solar panel (sp2) high in the atmosphere (in the stratosphere) the difference in power output between sp and sp2 negligible. I said that there would be a large difference in power output because sp has all of the atmosphere to block the suns rays and sp2 has very little atmosphere because it is very high up (in the stratosphere) therefore more sun can get to the panel and more power is produced.who is correct? many thanks in advance, please leave sources if possible, for validity.
