One of the things to be aware of if you are a bit of a handyman and want to build your own solar panel is the efficiency of the solar cell. This is important because, although you can, link up several solar cells to build your own solar panel at a fraction of the cost of commercial panels relatively easily, you will need to invest in solar cells.
Now, what we are doing here is two things, primarily we are wanting to cut our electricity bills by installing solar panels. The second object is to save money by doing it ourselves. Now this is where the efficiency of the solar cells are important. We need to balance cost against efficiency if we really want to save money because it is the final cost of your homes solar energy system that matters.
OK, right now you are probably think, yeah, well of course, the better the solar cells I install, the more efficient the system will be and the more money I will save. And you would be wrong.
We have talked about the different ways of producing solar cells in other articles, but in simple terms, there are two types we will look at here. Polycrystalline and mono crysalline.
Polycrystalline cells are build from small, multiple slices of silicon, whereas mono crystalline cells are built from one, larger slice. The later cells are certainly more efficient, a poly cell is rated somewhere between 16% and 20% efficient, a mono cell can be rated around 30% efficiency level. Logic would dictate that we should build our own panels with 30% efficiency panels. But wait a moment.
Mono crystalline panels are more complex to manufacture, their cost can, be several times more than polycrystalline. Ahh, now maybe the maths start to tumble into place, we are gaining a 10% increase in generation but at what cost? It may well be that we are not actually saving money at all.
So this is what we mean when we say you need to look past the sales talk and hype and balance the efficiency of the solar cell you are thinking of against the total cost to work out if it is economical or not.
- Q: Why would someone use a solar panel? Does it have to do with the economy right now, global warming, or what?
- I doubt the immediate economy has much to do with it. Solar panels require long-term investment, so in hard times, someone having trouble making ends meet is not going to be buying solar panels, when they could be buying food. It's like if someone has a gas guzzler, if they get laid off, they're not going to spend their savings on a new, fuel efficient car, even if it saves money in the long term. However, it's generally the more wealthy that install solar, and they're not impacted as much by a slow economy. Human nature being what it is, I doubt many people install solar to save the planet. There will be some, but I suspect most are interested in the long-term financial savings. I'm kind of unusual, in that our panels are break-even financially at best. The main reason I put them up was for the fun of learning and doing it.
- Q: Lower solar panel/wind turbine prices allow wider applications, hence a great help to a greener mother earth!
- economies of scale or mass production is the answer to just about any item being made cheaper.be it cars or computers or solar panels. Now, how to get there is the question..... market forces? as more people want a 'greener product demand goes up quantity produced goes up unit price goes down....but that takes awhile.... government help ? subsidies...the US gov takes some of your tax money and makes it available as rebate to people putting panels/wind systems in their homes, and establishes policies to companies to take less taxes if they build wind/solar.... government orders: You MUST put in a solar panel ( or we'll send the Green Police to bust you)
- Q: I would like to know if I had a mobile kitchen could I power it from solar panels mounted atop the vehicle (truck).(to power electric kitchen equipment, i.e. stove, deep fryer.), instead of propane…could I possibly connect the solar panels to a battery to save my generated electricity? If solar panels would not be enough power could a small windmill suffice…?
- The best way to find out is to determine the wattage of each piece of equipment you want to use and how many hours you want to use those pieces of equipment. Finally, calculate the total number of Watt-Hours you need at minimum. Then you need to research solar panels or mobile wind mills (they need to be pretty huge to get a decent amount of energy I think, so solar power is probably the way to go). You will need to figure out the efficiency of the solar panels, the size of the array, how you will turn it or if you will turn it at all (to face the sun to get the maximum energy input, or maybe to use mirrors so you don't have to turn it. Once you find a good configuration for your mobile kitchen, you need to calculate if the Watt-Hours you will generate on an average day (with average weather) is enough to power the equipment whose energy requirements you previously calculated. Then you have to keep in mind that some days will have no sun, and you may not be working on some days, but you can still capture sunlight. For each case, a large battery array will be required. If you had a guage on that array, you could also hook it up to the a small generator in case you need immediate power. It's an eco-friendly process, but the initial cost is high and it requires a lot of research and planning. This is why most people do not do it--not because they don't want free energy from the sun, but because it's not easy to start collecting that energy in an efficient way. Sorry I couldn't give you more specific numbers, but a solar panel sales agency should be able to estimate whether or not you could do it (they'd probably set it all up for you too). ^_^
- Q: in the afternoon sun heat increases to high level due to which the panels heats up very high now my question is this heat will effect the panels life time and will damage the panels or not ??
- For mono-crystalline solar panels, most warranties guarantee 90% of the original efficiency when the panel has been used for 0 years, and they guarantee 80% of the original efficiency after 25 years of use. If the original efficiency is 5%, the efficiency after 0 years of use should be 3.5%, and the efficiency after 25 years of use should be 2%. Some people believe that the actual average rate of efficiency loss is slower than that. You might retain 85% of the original efficiency after 25 years, making the average efficiency drop about 0.6% per year. After 75 years, a solar panel that was originally 5% efficient might still be about 8% efficient.
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power a farm?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power a farm. By harnessing the sun's energy, solar panels can generate electricity that can be used to power various farm operations such as pumps, irrigation systems, lighting, and even machinery. This renewable energy source offers a sustainable and cost-effective solution for farmers looking to reduce their reliance on traditional power sources and reduce their carbon footprint.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a university campus or educational facility?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a university campus or educational facility. In fact, many universities and educational institutions have already embraced solar energy as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for their energy needs. Installing solar panels not only reduces the environmental impact of the facility but also provides an opportunity for hands-on learning and research in renewable energy for students and faculty. Additionally, it can help save on energy costs and provide a reliable source of clean energy for the campus.
- Q: How long do solar panels last?
- Solar panels typically have a lifespan of around 25 to 30 years. However, with proper maintenance and care, they can last even longer.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a multi-story building?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a multi-story building.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a high-rise building?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a high-rise building. In fact, high-rise buildings can be ideal locations for solar panel installation due to their height and large surface areas. By utilizing the available roof space, high-rise buildings can generate significant amounts of solar energy, helping to reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources and lowering their carbon footprint.
- Q: can i put a solar panel on a projector. if nt wat is a low energy projector that i can watch movies and play games on
- Unlikely to prove useful. Solar panels don't generate very much current. You would probably wind up spending several thousand dollars, and wind up with a solar panel array (including batteries and power inverter) that is certainly not portable. You will also need adequate current for your projection source (ie DVD player or computer), as well as sound. By and large, the cheapest projectors require the least amount of power. There is no way around the fact that, for a projector to be practical, it must output out a great deal of light. Adequate light requires adequate current.
