- HDMI input on cheaper laptops highly unlikely, it's a pricey premium item. Check for gaming laptops, and maybe mobile workstations. Maybe searching for the same model of the mobile video chip on other laptops, but I don't think any of them will be cheap.

- smaller laptops use less battery yes. But they may last the same since larger devices come with larger batteries. I have a 15 laptop, but a 9 cell battery with itit lasts a good 2-3 hours more than the 6 cell depending on what i am doing

- sounds like the power options are set to go to hibernate or sleep automatically when ever it lid closes. These options can be changed on the power option on the control panel, in this case you want to set it to do nothing when the lid closes.
