Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
Most solar lamps use a single .2V nicd or nimh battery as a back-up supply, so they should be able to generate at least .5V in full sun to allow charging of the battery (you can verify the voltage of a single panel with your DMM) If you have two of these panels, I wouldn't expect them to make more than approximately 3V. The proper connection would be a series connection where the negative of one panel connects to the positive of the other and the remaining positive and negative wires become the outputs. Try this connection and measure again with your multimeter set to DCV and the panels in full sun. If the voltage is not high enough, add a third panel wired with its positive lead to the remaining negative of the first two. This should bring your voltage up another 50 percent.When you wire the panels positive to positive, negative to negative as you already have, voltage will be that of one panel, but current output will double (more amps) If you have many of these panels, you could combine series and parallel wiring to increase voltage and current.
Q: i attached a usb charger to my solar panel(it has an output of about .2 volts) but i read on my multimeter its only using about 8 volts however on the conventional wall charger that i use to charge it has an output of about 5. volts.... i believe that my mp3 player is not charging it does not display the charging icon when it is on or off ....is this becuase the output is higher ? do i need to install a volt dropping diode to prevent it from putting to much energy at once? (my mp3 charges fine on the wall charger but does not seem to respond to the solar panel so it the circuits are fine....)

Q: I'm looking at solar panels and I have NO IDEA what this stuff means.They come in catagories of Watts. What does that refer to? If a solar pannel is in the 200-watt catagory, what does that really mean? Will it produce 200 watts an hour, a day, a week, a month, a year?? This is not a precise analogy, but think of it this way: Volts is the pressure of the water in a pipe. Amps is the gallons per minute that come out. Watts is how much water you have after a certain length of time the pipe is open. a 200 watt solar panel under ideal conditions ( bright daylight between , say 0 am and 2 pm, held exactly flat to the sun ) will produce enough energy to run 2 00 watt light bulbs. You hardly ever have perfect bright sunlight; the length of the day varies during the year, and the angle of the panel to the sun changes from hour to hour; all this leads to a typical home in the US /Europe having only about 4 hours a day of maximum solar available. So, your 200 watt panel would give you 800 watts a day, enough to run one 00 watt light bulb for 8 hours If you are trying to run a house off solar, there are unfortunately other things needed between the panels and the lights / appliances; inverters, batteries, controllers sand each one eats up a little energy so you may get only 75 useful watts. A lot will depend on the Sun light available at location where you plan to install this. The electricity the panel generates is at times 0-20% only of what it is rated. Start small and do some initial readings on the generation and then scale up.

The panels themselves- no. Minimal. For most it is just hosing them off with water as needed to remove dust. Battereis on the other hand are usually needing attention every week to maintain the electrolyte levels. The exception being AGM types. Periodic desulphating may be needed on older setups, but beyond that keeping chickens are more demanding. Batteries are how you store your energy for periods when demand exceeds what the panels can deliver, and at night. How many varies. Factors of how you use energy has most impact. Some people can get by with a few hundred Watts, for others 3 to 5 Kilowatts are needed. For the average American, 5 to 7 Kilowatts as a minimum without some serious changes to how energy is used.
